When Did UA Begin Service To LHR From ORD?

Mon Nov 27, 2006 8:23 am

I am reading that United started serving LHR in 1991 with the purchase of slots from Pan Am. But I am not able to confirm what US gateway was used to service LHR. Does anybody know when ORD-LHR began on UA and if there were any lapses in this service in the last ~15 years?

TIA

I would say 1992, as that was when BA stopped their frequent-flier partnership with UA and went with USAir. I don't know of any lapse from then on for UA from ORD to LHR.

UA began LHR-ORD service in 1997.

Both Pan Am and TWA had LHR-ORD authority, but in the mid 1970's, PA agreed to drop LHR-ORD as part of an agreement between the two airlines to drop MANY routes that could no longer support both airlines. When the UK and the USA signed Bermuda II, ORD-LHR was officially limited to just one airline from each country, TWA and British Airways.

When United bought Pan Am's LHR authority in 1991, United was not allowed to fly Chicago-London due to Bermuda II. After several years of lobbying by UA, the one airline limit was lifted in 1997. The route has been served continuously by UA since then.

Thanks. I could've sworn it was earlier though.

...and the quid pro quo was that Virgin Atlantic could also serve the route. Actually Virgin didn't last long on the route, flying loads of 48, 63, 31 and 96 pax is just like putting all your money in a bag and throwing it over a cliff. UA do better cos they have such a giant hub at ORD.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

UA's timetable for 1 May 1991 shows nonstops LHR to IAD, JFK, SEA and SFO. The front cover headlines the new service to LHR, but no indication whether those cities started on 1 May or before.

LHR-LAX was to start on 7 May and LHR-EWR on 19 May.
