What Is Going On At SEA? Stuck In SJC.

Mon Nov 27, 2006 6:06 pm

Hi all. I know Seattle is getting a little snow but what is going on with flight AS356? I am waiting for that plane so i can fly AS477 SJC to SEA. We were scheduled to leave at 8:30p and that has been pushed 5 times and we are now scheduled for a 3am departure (5am arrival into SEA.) I can;t get much out of AS here in SJC except "weather"... and eventually an expired crew. I am guessing there has to be more to the inital delay then just weather. Did SEA get hit that hard?

SJC term C isn;t the coziest place to spend 6 hours.

It was snowing there, and while they didn't get blizzard-like accumulations or see the airport below landing minimums, the big reason for the delays was the de-icing operations. Aircraft can't be de-iced and just sit there indefinitely until ATC can get them airborne (due to holdover times, before de-icing has to be accomplished all over again) so there's an additional coordination step there in not de-icing aircraft any faster than ATC can get them out of town. The whole process of turning an aircraft around takes longer, and gets worse from there.

Thanks. Hard to believe it is just weather. The Port of Seattle and the local news reported that the weather was not causing any delays at SEATAC.

Well, it is, in the sense of a secondary effect, i.e. the snow is causing the need to de-ice, etc.

To be taken with a grain of salt, in this case, one about the size of Rhode Island...  Wink

...and, if it makes you feel any better, the folks just up the road in YVR are having similar problems:
