After all the bad news, I think "wail jet" is perhaps more appropriate...

Anyway, good on LH for a positive(?) nickname. I wonder how they came up with "Molly"? Did someone have a fat girlfriend with that name?
Inspiration, move me brightly!

Are you sure they aren't referring to the fish Molly. The are a freshwater species, and one of (if not the) biggest of the live-bearers. Originally from Africa or the Amazon (I forget sorry)

I thought Tupperware was for the A330/A340 - or at least from a cabin crew perspective - we all know the A340C is really referred to as "Hairdrier powered"  Wink

Remember the nickname for the 737-100 from LH, now that was a good one - if only I can remember what it was  Sad

The 737 series is still fondly called "Bobby" by many Lufthansa flight and cabin crews.
There is even a book about Bobby Boeing with many wonderful illustrations. If only I could remember the name of the author, who, no doubt was a Lufthansa flight attendant back then.

Cheerful flying.

I guess it comes from the German word "mollig" which means chubby. And the name Molly is in German somewhat linked to a chubby good natured lady. There is even a narrow-gauge steam train in Germany called "Molli".

concerning the 737 series flown by Hansa - "Schweinchen" "Bobby" and to a lesser extend "Fat Albert" all apply. There is a parkin aerea at the eastern end of the FRA apron which is also referred to as "Scweinebucht" ( Bay of Pigs)

In German the informal attribute "mollig" means "chubby". And if you nickname somebody female "Molly", you usually want to say that she is a little overweight. Well, for some girls it still might be a compliment though ...

I kind of cringe everytime I see someone call it the "whalejet" as well. ORD ground, tower, and approach have been calling the 747 the "whale" for a very long time. I can personally attest to the last 10 years. It is used so much that it has worked into my, and many other ORD pilots, vocabulary. To me the original "whale" will be the 747.

I like the name Molly for the A380. I hope it sticks.

Thanks, Vimanav! Apparently, "Bobby" must have been an intriguing topic, as there is a second book, named "Ich heisse Bobby" (My name is Bobby), written by Esmeralda Tirolf, a LH f/a. Bobby is the son of the proud parents, a B747 and a B727. For anyone hooked on aviation (such as yours truly) a recommended read!

I don't see why people are so sensitive about the term "whalejet." It aptly describes, in one word, awe at the A/C's mammoth, commandeering size and capacity, it's odd appearance at the "forehead," and the possible and proportionate (to it's size) challenges which need to be addressed upon it's introduction (challenges to infrastructure, wake separation, handling that many passengers at once, etc.)

The term "jumbo jet" was originally a rather unflattering nick-name for the 747, coined by somebody in the press, for the exact same reasons. And it very obviously refers to an awkward and unlikely flying elephant of Disney fame. It was not generated, obviously, by Boeing's publicity machine, or by Boeing supporters, but nevertheless, this nick-name "stuck." Yet the 747 then proved itself, and the nick-name "jumbo" became a term of endearment.

I suspect the same affection is in store for the 380 when it proves itself. Conversely, "Superjet," to my way of thinking, is pretentious P.R.

Yes, and the carrier based fighter you were thinking of was the A/RA-5 Vigilante. It actually was not a fighter, but a nuclear attack, then fast reconn aircraft.

"MOLLY" has a very positive implication. Remember "The Unsinkable Molly Brown", after all she survived the Titanic disaster.
