How Early Can You Check-in For An Int'l Flight?

Tue Nov 28, 2006 6:19 am

I am flying AA DCA-MIA-SCL on 12/23/2006. I figure lines on both check-in and TSA are going to be crazy. How early would AA let me check in?. How can I check if earlier flights into MIA might be available?. Would they charge during this time of the year.

I think i clearly remember checking in 24 hours before my scheduled departure for the AA RIC-ORD-DEL flight that I took a year ago.

I checked in 36 hours before my Monarch flight from Manchester to Malaga. I checked in, printed my boarding pass and when i arrived at the airport I just checked my baggage in and showed my boarding pass. So easy
The only problem with it is that board cards you get at the airport have a perferated edge which is easy for staff at the gate when boarding to tear off or stick through machine. If you print it from home, they have to fold the piece of paper (printed boarding pass) at the bottom and then tear which would be a real pain if every passenger on that flight had done it.

It depends on the airline and what you consider checking-in. Getting your boarding pass via an electronic checking is one thing--most airlines allow 24 hours there. Checking in at the airport and checking your luggage is another thing. Most airlines have a time limit as they don't want to manage all of the luggage that would be checked in. Check with your airline. It may also depend on the level of status you have with the airline as well.

You can likely check in up to 24 hours prior to departure; many airlines, however, say they won't accept checked luggage until 4 hours prior to departure.

That being said, last year on a domestic flight (LAS-CLE) I checked my luggage 7 hours prior to departure on CO with no problems. TSA kind of looked at me funny but that's a different story.

Yes getting your boarding pass is usually no problem 24 hrs. prior but the bags are a other story... at ZRH I usually check in my bags the evening prior departure with LX/AC but I guess not possible with any US carrier...

Outside of the US some airlines allow you to check your luggage as early as the day before. In The US i don't think that is allowed. For example, LH lets you check your luggage the day before, in Germany. But the same LH, won't allow prior day check-in in the US. I suspect TSA regulations have something to do with that. I think generaly speaking, the earliest you can check your luggage in the US, is 4 hours prior to your flight.

What I usually do, specially in MIA is to check in 6 or 7 hours before the flight, even before return my rented car, so after that I go to have lunch outside the airport and some other stuff, return the car and then I go directly to the gate say 1 hour before the flight.

When I flew AA out of NRT, I had a 9 hour connection from a JAL flight, and AA only allowed check-in (with checked baggage) 6 hours or less prior to departure. I do not know if that is the same policy in a place like DCA, where AA flies all day long.

You might call them, but they may not know over the phone, either.
