Air France Cancel Frequencies From JAN To MAR 07

Tue Nov 28, 2006 9:20 am

Air France update issued on 27NOV06 on Amadeus....

GGAIRAFNEWS A F N E W S EN 27NOV06 1516Z
****************************************************************
27NOV-PP.EA* CANCELLATION IN EUROPE FROM JAN TO MAR07 *PP*
***************************************************************
CANCELLATION OF FLIGHTS IN EUROPE ON THE FOLLOWING DESTINATIONS:
.
- BLQ, MIL, ROM, TRN
- FRA, DUS, MUC, STR
- PRG, MAD, GVA, IST, LHR

I guess they meant to say the frequencies but didn't bother to put that word in, otherwise cancelling 11 daily flights to GVA sounds bizarre.

Yes if they cancelled all of those it would be suicide, LHR, GVA, MAD, ROM, FRA especially, although all are pretty major feeder services for their long haul flights.

Does not mean cancellation of the destination!

Especially when the list includes LHR, MIL, FCO, GVA, FRA!
When I doubt... go running!

My guess that Air Berlin is taking a good chunk of the traffic. they serves just about every major German city from Paris.

No, it's just that their routemap is misleading, showing connecting flights as direct lines. But in reality, AB service to Paris is very limited: they only have 5-weekly service to NUE, and 3 daily flight inherited from DBA, DUS-ORY. And there is Niki's service to Vienna, but that's it.

It seems like a very normal reduction of the schedule during the winter season.

I suggested deletion of this treat.
First, the "title" is wrong.

Then this information on the Amadeus page is not a big scoop.
The Jan-Mar period is traditionnaly a very low season, after Chrsitmas and New Year.
This is just a warning that some flights can be sometimes cancelled to avoid overcapacity, especially on these destinations which are among AF's biggest routes on its European network (especially to GVA, DUS, LHR, MUC, FCO, MAD) and served by so many Daily flights.

Not my own route map because I don't specify CDG/ORY  Wink

Again, when it comes to first look, title looked misleading but rather funny. But it doesn't really qualify deletion.

I agree the post is badly worded. There is a huge difference between cancelling some flights and discontinuing service altogether.

I've flown DUS-CDGat least 10 times in the past 3 years. The 07:25 flight was usually well booked as it connects to a lot of AF flights departing late morning and noontime.

Would hate to see this flight cancelled.

Because next year both the TGV and ICE will link Paris to Germany.

It will then only take three hours to get from Paris to Frankfurt or Stuttgart. That will dramatically affect the loads only connecting passengers will then use the plane. Thus the reduction of frequencies.

I can't imagine AF cancelling IST. It was my very first flight over 20 years ago. Last summer 3xdaily mostly 320,319s. Maybe reducing it to two during the slow winter season. I can't see them dropping down less than that if they really want to compete with TKs 2xdaily.

Don't worry ! As said by FlySSC, AF doesn't drop these routes. It's just frequencies adjustments. IST is a successful route for AF. Can you imagine an airline dropping routes to major capitals like LHR, FRA, PRG (a skyteam hub), FCO, etc !

I've flown FRA-CDG and vice versa quite often in recent years, even before Air Berlin came into play.

AFs morning and late afternoon flights should serve them well but the others probably don't. I remember them cancelling their latest evening flight more than once so I had to hurry from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 in order to catch the last LH flight which was usally packed. They also cancelled their late morning flight at 10.50 more than once.

It appears that LH is too strong here although I never understood why. I always preferred AF on FRA-CDG but obviously I'm in a minority.

LH is also cancelling flights quite often on this route

Ah, thank you for the information.

I usually fly AF so I'm not familiar with what LH is doing precisely.

But every time AF cancelled a flight I could take the next LH flight. But that's just my experience.

Faster trains might in fact do additional damage to these routes. Today it takes six hours from Frankfurt to Paris by train but if it will take three hours in the future the train will become competetive given the time you lose at airports and from airports to the city.
