A380 Sydney Tarmac Photos.

Tue Nov 28, 2006 3:35 pm

G'day A'netters  Smile,

I know that there are at least two A380 in Sydney threads, but they are discussions without photos, so please don't flame me. The A380 arrived at about 8:52AM Sydney time and landed on runway 34L. The aircraft was parked on bay 57 of pier "C" at the international terminal.

It was amazing how so many people suddenly materialised out of thin air for the arrival. I had no idea so many people worked at Sydney airport! The funny thing with the A380 is that when you view any element individually, you sense the amazing size of the machine, but as a whole there is not really the same sense of size.

Anyway, here are the photos, I apologise in advance for the quality  blush !

Regards, JetMech

Excellent photos. Do you know that the photo from directly under its nose looking up really makes it look damn ugly. Never knew the tail exhaust looks like the B777 rear exhaust

Interesting to note how the rear-most axle has what appears to be a completely different hub and/or rim than the rest...Any idea(s) as to why?

IIRC, the wheels on the rear axle of the Body Landing Gear are not equipped with brake units. I am quite sure that the difference is due to brake cooling fans that are installed on the wheels with brakes. I suspect that all the wheels may be the same design, with the brake cooling fan installed as a separate item  Confused .

Amazingly detailed pics, more detail than I've seen so far and really appreciated. There are so many cool details on this jet.

Thanks.

Looks similar to the variance in wheels on 18 wheel trucks in the USA, for the same reason.

I know what you mean - my only glimpse of an A380 was one high in the sky over Carcosonne in the summer and it just looked like a normal plane but then you see one parked next to a 737 or A318 and it's a beast!

Great Pix, thanks for posting! I love looking at the Cyclops sized machinery. As for overall proportions, I'd rather ogle an A340, to stay in the family.

B*gger the blue sky, we need a good bank of clouds, but with our recent luck, even a bank of cloud would probably not deliver rain. If they could fly the Whale round Warragamba dam and produce rain, the NSW Government would buy 10 immediately - without IFE!

You remember correctly, it can be clearly seen in the images above. I somehow wonder how they will manage the RTO test (remembering the A340-600 issue). Was it already performed?

Airbus had to perform an RTO test prior to the ELF flights last month.
IIRC (someone correct me) thetest was done up to 95% of the max requirement, so the 100% still has to be done.
Airbus said this was a precaution against damaging the plane prior to the ELF + route-proving trials.

100% RTO will be the last on the list  Smile

Yeah. I agree. I was at JNB when she arrived on Sunday morning. Amazing sight. I think the reason she does not seem so big is because of the height of the double deck which seems to fore-shorten her, so she looks rather short and fat. But she sure is one big lady!

It's not your fault the plane needs a good washing  Wink Seriously, you'd think they'd take better care of that exterior considering this is basically the company's flagship airplane right now. Perhaps this is their attempt at an AF paint job??

The plane is FILTHY!

I'm surprised the French don't seem to show any pride in displaying this aircraft. Of course, as already mentioned, it does fit in well with Air France aircraft.

I agree on the scale issue. Having wandered around a couple of 380s at the assembly hall site, from a distance you find yourself asking what is the big deal, then you walk closer... and closer... and closer...

Stunning looking plane. I love the shape of it, it's just like a 737-200 but with the eyebrow windows of the seven-three as the main cockpit windows. It is actually beautifully in proportion, but looks blind. Ja? I am ze philosphiyr? JA?!

G'day A'netter's  ,

Thanks for looking at and commenting on the photos! I just got home from work and the A380 was parked (on bay 84 / 85 ?) next to a VS A346. I am not too sure if the A380 has departed yet (due to depart midday?), but if any Sydney-siders still want to chance it for a look, get onto Southern Cross Drive (airport tunnel) and follow the green line if you are coming from down south or the red line if you are coming from up north.

I'm glad the photo quality is okay. I did play around with the brightness and contrast before posting them, but that is about the limit of my abilities. It seems that the photos have been shrunk to about 80% of full-size, which may account for the "jaggedness" of some of the lines and round objects. I also downloaded the photos to my profile where they appear at full-size and better clarity.

I actually think that the A380 is a reasonably attractive plane to look at; especially side on. There are two things that do grate with me however. The nose does look a bit ordinary from many angles and Airbus also seems to have a thing for putting as many hideously large canoe fairings under the wings as they can fit; which really reduces the gracefulness of the wings.

Quoting AutoThrust (Reply 36):

Yes, it is WXXL.

Quoting QFA380 (Reply 32):

Unfortunately not QFA380   .

Anyhow, thanks again for all the comments, I am seriously considering upgrading to a better camera and some Photoshop software, and I will hopefully have more interesting photos to post in future!

Regards, JetMech

Looking at this plane and the individual jet bridges for each level of the aircraft makes me yearn for my first trip in an A-380. the dilemma this plane creates, of course is, on which floor do I book my seat? (I think the second floor -- I mean, it's a new world up there)

Thanks for the photos. Will be exciting to see a passenger filled plane pull up to the gate after a long haul flight.

Is it just me or is the 380 not that high off the ground for a plane that size. I was looking at the people under the plane and they almost were touching there heads on the belly. It seams like something that big would be way off the ground.

Jetmech,
Great photos, whilst not a huge fan of the overall shape(love the wings tho) I do appreciate the details your pics show.

For those still coming to grips with the size of the thing....

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 683 File size: 115kb

The "bugsmasher" in that pic is a VS A346, no tiddler in it's own right.

Apologies for lousy pic quality, distance, heat haze wind and dust conspired against photographic achievement.

Nice photo Stealth Z  bigthumbsup ! What time did you snap that one? I actually had the chance to go around to bays 84 / 85 to get a photo of the A380 and VS A346, but I left my camera at home as I thought that the A380 was departing yesterday  Yeah sure. When the A380 was parked on bay 57, there was a J* A320 next to it. That would have been a brilliant photo opportunity but unfortunately, I could not get a good angle  Sad .

Jetmech,
Great photos, whilst not a huge fan of the overall shape(love the wings tho) I do appreciate the details your pics show.

For those still coming to grips with the size of the thing....

The "bugsmasher" in that pic is a VS A346, no tiddler in it's own right.

Apologies for lousy pic quality, distance, heat haze wind and dust conspired against photographic achievement

What was the wind like? I see the A380's upper rudder deflected to the right and the lower rudder deflected left and the A340's rudder appears to be faired? Should I assume the wind was swirling?

Pretty much, and was 25-30kn from generally 160 deg so was from almost directly behind those parked A/C
If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!
