Will We Ever See SAA Ordering 777s?

Tue Nov 28, 2006 6:19 pm

Do you think that there is a chance to see SAA ordering 777s?

No, i don't think they will order them, simply because the A340 family offerst them what they want! They are moving towards an all-airbus airline anyway..

They will withdraw their 737NGs, I think

I believe a long-haul twin makes no sense for SAA at this time. The trans-oceanic long-haul routes SA flies are basically JNB - the Americas, and JNB - Australia/Asia. JNB - North America/HKG can be accomplished under ETOPS, but I believe JNB - South America and JNB - Australia are not ETOPS routes (I'm open to correction on this). It wouldn't make any sense for SA to invest in ETOPS certification for a small subset of its routes. It makes sense to have a single fleet of long-haul craft that can be rotated through the routes as needed, instead of having what would essentially be a sub-fleet dedicated to a few routes -- which is (I guess) the major reason why the A330 hasn't found its way into the SA fleet either.

SAA wont withdraw their 738 fleet, they phased out 732 and got A319 instead. Dont see a order for 777 though, they got 6-7 A346. Maybe 777F in the pipeline

I heard they would withdraw their 737NGs in 2010

They already did, in the 90's IIRC, but the order was subsequently cancelled.

I posted a link to the Boeing report on the SAA 777 order some months ago and was roundly flamed for doing so and "misinforming" the forum so I won't do it again, but if you check boeing.com you will find it.

My wife's boss has a model of a 787 in SAA colours in his office....

SAA did have an order for 4 777 in the early 1990's. After a decision was made to re-fleet with Airbus A320 and A340's the order died. SAA used the deposit money from the 777 order to finance part of the 737-800 order SAA has today.

Do you remember which T7s those were supposed to be?

I think it is very unlikely that they'll get some, but it can't be ruled out.

That is a different story.

I don't think a SA B777 is ever going to see African soil.
I do however think SA could order B748i's some day to replace it's current B744 fleet for its LHR flights.
SA is barely making a profit at the moment and the profit they are making is artificially inflated by Govt bailouts, so I don't see anything ordered in the short term- although I hope I'm wrong.

Somehow I think you are misinformed about SAA's profitability.

Somehow you are misinformed, look at this article from a SA newspaper:
www.mg.co.za/articlePage.aspx?articl...023&area=insight_economy_business/

Be sure to read the part about Govt bailouts and a big accounting change to put SAA into profitabilty.

Lack of profitability is not usually a big deterrent to ordering new planes, especially if those new planes can help the airline go back to profitability. Look at most US legacy carriers. They're not exactly making money and they are ordering new planes, even while in bankrupcy.

Yeah, I realize that, and I hope SAA does order new planes. The only difference is SA is Government owned and funded and with the current uproar about the Mango LCC startup, the taxpayers are not going to be happy with any new orders. Hopefully this will change in the coming years.

Also the legacy carriers in the USA are hardly ordering planes in great numbers, and UA actually deferred A320 deliveries as well as US while in BK.
