New Carrier For ABE

Thu Nov 30, 2006 12:37 am

Quote:
New airline coming to LVIA
Lehigh Valley International Airport plans to announce a new airline that will service the hub at a news conference scheduled for 1 this afternoon. Officials would not identify the airline Tuesday, except to say that it will provide local travelers nonstop service from LVIA. George Doughty, executive director of the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority that runs LVIA, deferred further comment until the news conference.

From the local paper's online teasers. Any thoughts on who or what it might be? This being something like the sixth airline to start service at ABE in as many years, it's hardly big news, but interesting nonetheless.

Could it be B6? Or maybe American Eagle returning?

Out of all those airlines how many are still in business? I think G4 is the only one around.

I don't have any guesses... I guess we will have to wait until 1:00pm for the big announcement.

Well, I didn't want to be the one to post it, but I saw murmurs here about WN at ABE, but it doesn't make sense so close to PHL.

Perhaps we should turn it into a contest. Correct guess gets an all expense paid trip to the beautiful Lehigh Valley.

If that is true it would be BIG news for ABE and another blow to MDT.

I just checked the airports website (www.lvia.org) and there is nothing listed...yet.

the news article says that it will be a new AIRLINE, not a new route. Allegiant already serves ABE from SFB. I'm not surprised that will add PIE, so this is either mis-information from the news folks (can't imagine that would happen - NOT) or a different development.

That's what we need...another new charter type airline. So many have served ABE. Like I said earlier, G4 is the only one still around and it appears they will be for a long time.

One hour to go...

Interesting... Didn't Pace operate another company...Interstate Air or something like that? I remember them operating 757's to LAS from ABE.

Any bets on how long this company stays in business?

Southern Skyways?
Don't like knocking anybody's startup idea...but...
They should really move the MYR dot on their map to the coast.

Interstate Jet is what you're thinking. They used Pace planes but were owned by a different company. They had the 757s ABE-LAS and SWF-LAX, but didn't stick for long though. Interstate also ran BWI-SWF (and some other routes from SWF aside from the west coast, I think) for all of about 2 months around 2002/2003.

I would guess because the folks running 'Southern Skyways' and the people running Pace are different. Just like the Western/Xtra scenario. Pace is just supplying a/c etc, while SS is taking the (big) risk in this endeavor.
Personally, I do not give it much of a chance to succeed.

I'll have to agree with you on that one. I don't see that much traffic going from ABE to MYR.

I find it interesting that all these different airlines operated by Pace have gone out of ABE. What's the big attraction other than the Philly and New Jersey areas???

You have the third and sixth largest cities in the state of Pennsylvania right next to each other and more than 600,000 people in the two counties LVIA serves. More population and greater affluence, I'm guessing, than the areas MDT and AVP serve make it a reasonably good place to recruit butts for seats.

I've never really seen the big attraction to Myrtle Beach, but I guess if you're into golf, it must be nice to get down there in the dead of winter.

There was Southeast flying DC-9s and MD-80s down to Florida and later Las Vegas. They went bankrupt. Interstate (by Pace) was flying to LAS and LAX. They still have a website, but I'm not sure if they're still flying. Hooters was flying to Florida and Myrtle Beach. They closed down. I'm not too sure if Vacation Express was flying from ABE, I don't remember it.

And, before all this, there was the great Pan Am flying their 727s to SFB. We were one of their first cities. AirTran (before ValuJet bought it) flew down to Florida and up to BOS too.

A lot of these carriers still owe ABE money.

The Lehigh Valley is one of Pennsylvania's fastest growing areas. And more money has shown up in the area recently. Its attracting more affluent residents and the economy of the area is doing really well.

Me either. But it is a pretty popular destination for people up here. Its not too far away and it has nice weather, like you said.

Was the billed owed by Southeast close to a $1 million? I might be wrong but I thought it was a pretty good amount.

I didn't think it was that much, but yes, it was $1 million. And Hooters owes $1 million, as well.

And I forgot to add that TransMeridian also served ABE. They went bankrupt shortly thereafter.

This is the list from the time I used to live in the Lehigh Valley to present:

Pan Am (to Manchester?)
InterstateJet (to points south)
Southeast Air Lines (to Las Vegas and points south)
Transmeridian (to points south)
Hooters Air (to Myrtle Beach, and I believe Vegas at one point)

Now they have Pace in another guise. Another reason Pace is interested in ABE, I believe but could be wrong, is that Pace is affiliated with Piedmont Hawthorne which has the FBO on the field. I may be way off base there though.

Pace was sold by Piedmont Hawthorne several years back to Robert Brooks, who used them to operate Hooters Air (Brooks' original plan was to take over Vanguard and rename it Hooters Air, but NJ decided to turn down his offer.).

I think I know the answer to this, but after seeing so many carriers go into ABE and then flame out, I have to ask... Are the operating costs at ABE comparable to other small airports? Are they less than those of PHL?

One oddity of their web page is that they show a 737 in Skyways livery at the top-right of the pace and show the underbelly of an A319/320 in full Airbus colors at the Book A Flight section of the page on the left. Oops!  Silly

Another tidbit (if ABE's website is correct) their airline code, SS, actually matches their name.

Sometimes they just make them up. Southeast didn't have an IATA number, so I think they just used their ICAO designator.

But, yes, also note that picture of the B737 was used by Vacation Express and Interstate Jet. It's also on Pace's website.

Also, Southeast and Interstate Jet shared commercials. After Interstate Jet left ABE, Southeast took the Interstate Jet's old "Just $99 to Las Vegas!" ad and edited out the Interstate Jet logo/voice references. I think Hooters also did the same for Florida ads.
