What Happened To The Planned DXB-CPH Service?

Thu Nov 30, 2006 8:46 pm

I remember reading somewhere long time ago (about 6 months) that EK was planning on starting a service from DXB to CPH which should have started Oct. 3rd. This didn't happen. I was looking forward to see an Emirates at CPH!
Anyone who knows the story??

Regards.

Unfortunately, it got caught up in the whole Danish cartoons issue and Denmark hasn't really been flavour of the month in the Arab world this past year, so the timing was unlucky.

Right. Although I've read that United Arab Emirates says that it wasn't the problem, but that they where short of planes to service CPH. I didn't buy that comment. Hence I started this topic. Sorry if disturbing someone..

Regards.

You are right. You really shouldn't buy that argument, because the EK fleet is not nearly as heavily utilized as the airline wants us to believe. As it goes, EK has plenty of spare capacity at hands, and could start a DXB CPH flight tomorrow if it wanted. The airline has been facing some crew shortages, though, which at some point might have precluded it from opening new gateways, but I don't know in how far these shortages continue to exist. It seems, though, as if the next European destination will be Venice, so I guess that CPH has lost out on the much covetted Emirates service for the time being.

According to the travel news site www.standby.dk, Emirates has postponed the start-up until 2007.

Future flights: CPH-BOS; CPH-SVG; CPH-PVG-HKG-MNL-DVO; CPH-CDG; CPH-NRT; CPH-MIA; CPH-PVG

Yes, that seems to be the sad outcome. As a note EK should have said that they, in a year, will have 100 aircrafts in service. Is that a signal, that they still consider starting this service in the future? Anyhow, I think it would have been operated by a A332. Can't think of any other option, though I wouldn't mind seing a 777.  Smile
To me Venice sound odd??

Perhaps EK did a "possible yields"-study and found that there is little demand for premium seats, as most Scandinavians go to DXB on inclusive tour holidays and want cheaps seats, like on MyTravel 410-seat A333s...?

I guess the truth is somewhere in the middle. Maybe they forsaw that the cartoon problem would just push the expected yield below what's desirable, as just a few high yield Danes and Arabs would now not fly in 2006.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?
