BA-YYC Dec 1st Inaugural Flight

Fri Dec 01, 2006 6:32 am

BA new YYC route starts tomorrow with the flight arriving at 16:55 MST.It will be really nice to see the 777 on a regular visit here. The weather looks questionable and the light will be fading at that time. I wonder what the spotter turn-out will be like here? There are still seats available and you can pick-up a seat on that flight returning a day later to LHR for GBP403 taxes included! That would be cool!

Well the weather won't be great, but at least it won't be the -28 with -41 windchills we've had all week.

And GBP 403 roundtrip fare is nothing great. That's close to $900 CAD. Before I could non-rev I was paying less than that on AC.

No it is not great but don't forget it is a 'reverse' fare and also it is on the first flight, that would make it a little higher. I was only looking and quoting the fare as I thought it would be neat to come out for the weekend on the inaugural flight. Having said that I think some of BA fares are competitive. I just had a quick look at them. At least there is another choice for a regular carrier to Europe from YYC apart from AC.(charters and low-cost aside) Also one cannot beat BA's offered connections from LHR. (and no, I dont work for BA)

That's true, but one could say the same for AC coming in the other direction (LHR-YYC).

I'll be taking this flight next summer - already booked in CW. Does anyone know if there will be any kind of lounge access available in YYC by then? BA's list of lounge locations doesn't show Calgary yet but maybe there's something in the rumour mill? All of the upgrades from WT+ to CW were gone for SEA-LHR so having to fly out of YYC to upgrade and may have a lengthy layover - it would be nice to have access to a lounge (BA's own or shared).

Interestingly enough the booked load is higher on the YYC-LHR sector, but altogether quite healthy both ways for an inaugral.

In the middle of winter? Let me put it this way. I'd love to switch places with you, mate.

If they water cannon that plane they better be using a 50% glycol mix or the plane will be immobolized until the next chinook.

You guys all seem pleased to have a 777 at Calgary. I lived in Quebec for a year and so only saw YUL, what kind of traffic do you normally get at Calgary?

Thanks

Quite busy, 4th busiest, I think, behind YUL. Daily 333 flights, occasional charter 744 in the summer. But fairly active with domestic 320 319 321 and West-Jets NG 737. The excitement is that BA offers another choice for the Europe route (apart from AC), and of course we get to see another wide body in YYC.

I was also hoping to get some shots of BA arriving but I think the light at her scheduled arrival time wont be good, if the flight is already late, then quite unlikely.

I wonder why my img above post does not show?

Yep, that's about it. Of course there's the Maple Leaf lounge in A wing but that's only for AC and STAR Alliance executive pax.

Both lounges are post security, so if you have a long layover (not likely on the AC side) then you have to stay passed security, unless you want to spend 8 hours in a mall style food court.

Don't forget this isn't the first time we've had 777's in YYC. One summer a couple of years ago ANA operated their charters with 777's.

Also, I've had the pleasure of working a UA 777 that diverted about 8 months ago due to a medical emergency.

Bloody long it took BA to serve the oil sands capitol of Canada. Calgary should be a hell of a lot more important then Montreal to British Airways. Good Luck to BA on its new Canadian venture.

It was supposed to arrive at 4:55 PM. It was late about half an hour, but that's okay, because traffic on McKnight was crazy! We need to do something about this city's traffic... Took me 30 minutes to drive from 32nd and Barlow to the 34 parking lot on McKnight... that's ridiculous.. on a good day it'll take me 3 - 5 minutes.

And don't forget Tony Fokker's "Canadian North" F-100, which shuttles back and forth to YEG. Here's a so-so pic of it (C-GPNL).
Gotta love its polar bear livery on the fin.

Also, several daily flights to Alaska Airlines' SEA hub on AS and its regional subsidiary, Horizon Air. So, numerous B737 and Q400 (DH4) deployments in and out of YYC. Hopefully, I'll be lucky enough to see the BA 777 when I next fly to YYC, which I do a couple times a year to see Calgary Flames hockey games. (Go Flames!)

Hi all

I was operating crew on the first flight in to Calgary and it's absolutely fantastic to be here. Starting a new route is always exciting, but to be coming somewhere as important as Calgary and being on the first flight is a real treat.

Did anyone happen to get any pictures of the flight on taxi to stand? We were hanging flags out of the flight deck window - Union Jack on the left and the Canadian flag out the right. I'd really like to get a copy of a picture, for I was the one holding the Canadian flag.

Again, great to be here - only wish I'd remembered my winter coat.

Calgary is the fastest growing city in Canada and one of the fastest in all of North America. This city has 6 major high rise office tower complex in the works or in construction which will total about +10 million sq ft once done. (10 towers total) That is more office development than Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, and Edmonton Combined. (within downtown Business district)

Oh and updates for the YYC runway expansion.
The East parallel runway size is going to be 14,550'x300'.
Dedicated parking for cargo on that side will be A380F capable and so is the runway.

Meanwhile, BA's arrival should work out well for the business traveller.

"Building boom outpaces Toronto
Calgary's office space growth leads nation
Mario Toneguzzi Calgary Herald Wednesday, November 29, 2006

CREDIT: Herald Graphic(Office space construction)Calgary has a whopping 45 per cent share of all new office space construction across the country this year.
And the CB Richard Ellis 2007 market outlook says the city's proportional share in national square footage under construction is expected to rise to above 50 per cent next year once all the buildings scheduled to begin are underway.

The report released Tuesday says Calgary has 35 buildings committed to be built or under construction -- 11 downtown and 24 in the suburban market -- compared to Toronto at 23 (five downtown and 18 suburban).
"Traditionally, Toronto has been the dominant city dating back to probably 100 years in Canada. A city of four million people," said Mike Gigliuk,
Alberta director of research for CB Richard Ellis. "And now, as a result of the energy industry, we've rivalled and surpassed them in terms of construction activity and inventory growth.

"So a quarter of the size and yet we've got more construction underway than they do. It definitely highlights the shift towards the West in terms of business and economic growth."

The national report says construction in excess of 11.5 million square feet of office space was begun in 2006 with Calgary and Toronto totalling eight million square feet. For Calgary, that's just over five million square feet, of which almost 2.9 million is downtown."

SO what, Calgary is now the dominant city in Canada??

If any BA crew need some ideas for places to go for drinks, etc in downtown Calgary, I'm gonna be in town 18th Dec to Jan 2nd! I love it there.

BTW - which hotel has been chosen for BA Crew>?

I would hope that nobody would put that information on this public website. It's not difficult information to find, but you're unlikely to get it through airliners.net....
Cabin crew, doors to manual and cross check.

Off topic but anybody that was spotting notice if the IL-76 was still parked on the West pad? I've been off for a few days.

Yes...it was a UCA Ukrainian Cargo Airlines machine. It was there the entire 5 days I was at YYC.

Most of Calgary's "top notch" hotels are downtown. I doubt they will stay anywhere near the airport.

Uh, what exactly does the 'etc' refer to?

Joe's Sleep E-Z Motel on Deerfoot Trail. They'll be waiting for you in room 4B.

No doubt.

Understood, no problem. But there may be some concerns placing specific lodging info on the 'net. You'll agree there's no shortage of weirdos out there who like the cabin crew.
