Is There A Visitor's Terrace At IAH?

Fri Dec 01, 2006 6:38 am

Hi everyone,

this upcoming Sunday I'm on a trip SLC-IAH-CDG-NUE on DL and AF and if all the flights are on time I will have a few hours to kill in IAH. So I was wondering if there is a visitor's terrace or another good spot with a view over the airport? I don't have my good camera with me but I still like just to look at the planes and the traffic on the runways/tarmac....

thanks for your input,

Well not in the true sense of the word 'terrace'. However there are 3 rooftop (car park) venues that are very popular with spotters and photographers. These are located at terminal C, D, and the A/B car park. It should be noted all of these locations are outside the securtity area. So should you venture out you will need to clear TSA security again. These venues offer great views of the ramp action as well as runway action.

cool, thanks.... as for TSA, I will arrive Terminal A from SLC and leave from Terminal D towards CDG onboard AF 33 - so to the best of my knowledge I have to recheck security anway.... so I think I will head to one of those car parks if time allows. Thanks again!

IF you end up with less time, the train that connects Continental 1 with Continental 2 and Mega-Continental 3 terminals also offers good views. Apparently, there's also a round restaurant in the top of that round tower that is in the middle of the airport, but I've never found a way into it. Maybe some native Houstoners can give some light there...

thanks for your input, as well  Smile I doubt, however, I will get access to one of the CO terminals... remember I'm arriving on DL@Terminal A and will be holding a boarding pass for leaving from Terminal D - I doubt I will get past security at any other terminal than D with that one...  Sad

Terminal D has access to the CO gates. Have a look at the terminal map.......

I think you can have DL check your bags to CDG, just show them your boarding pass for the AF flight. This may be just for US domestic flights though..so check when your checking in at SLC.

They sure, can... I was speaking about security, not baggage  Smile

looking at the map you posted, though, it looks I can take the bus from A to B and then the TerminaLink to C/D - which I might do then... certainly more interesting than an underground train...

Have things improved for spotters at IAH?

I had an awful time about 3 years ago, got chased off the car park roof by the cops and had TSA grill me when trying to spot from my hotel, the Marriott.

I'd love to go back as the viewing is great, but not if it's a pain in the butt still.

I seem to recall your run in from a few years back. Despite your unusually bad luck (TSA was way out of bounds giving you grief at the Marriott, imo. Sounds like some overzealous rookie trying to impress their superiors), IAH is still a spotters haven (at least a hassle free haven). That said it is advised to give HAS security a ring just to let them know of your presence, as it is likely some "Nervous Nellie" passing by may report you. Frankly the few run ins that I have heard of in the past few years, were police just checking up on a given spotter/photographer, no biggies.

Scroll down, the phone # is just above the frequency list

If you should find yourself to IAH someday, contact the guys at the above club and I am sure that one or two would be happy to show you around.

The 'round tower' is the Marriott Hotel and the restaurant is called 'CK's'. Located between Term B and C. The underground inter-term. train (not the overhead terminalink) has a stop there.  eyepopping

How does one find the underground train? I've been through IAH several times (a dozen in the last two years??? more than that, I think) and never noticed it!

Just push the 'LL' button on any elevator at A, B, C. or The Marriott Hotel and the stops are right in front of you.
