UAL Pilot's Hat Logos / Other Airlines Do This?

Fri Dec 01, 2006 7:47 am

Why do UAL pilots have the very "old" classic UAL logo on their hats instead of a newer logo? Is there an option?

Do other airlines use their classic logos on their pilot's hats?

You can clearly see the symbol in question on the front end of this DC-6.

I'm not sure why, but I will say that I really like them. The new logo would look a bit odd there anyway...

We have the shield as a heritage symbol. Also the stars on the hat represent the companies that were merged to make up UNITED AIR LINES. The hat logo also carriers a prop as a recognition of the recips from which we came.

I am a cheerleader for our heritage and the respect for the past that the company has. Our Flight Training center at the old Stapleton Airport in Denver has a museum's worth of collections and photos featured of different UAL items. Mr Jeppesen himself was a UAL pilot and many of his own notes are on display at the center. I wish all enthusiast could get a chance to visit the building and enjoy those historical items.

Hawaiian also uses an old logo for their pilots' wings. They use the i'iwi logo that first appeared in 1955 as seen on the nose of their aircraft of the time.

Great to hear this from you. It makes me wonder if and when United will do a retrojet c/s...they are a proud airline.

Having been in the flight training center in the late 1980s, I do recall quite a bit of history around the place...I especially recall a flight simulator (from decades ago) that reminded me of a child's penny-operated machine that you find in grocery markets or Walmarts...it looked like a mini WWII prop fighter - very interesting indeed. I could go on...

Anyhow, thanks for the explanation.

Northwest has the same on their hats as well as their pilot's wings.

Delta had the onld Widget up until very recently on their hats.

It's been a while, but I think they're different. The hat has the old Northwest "roundel" logo on it, and the wings only have US Air Mail on them.

actually, back in the Leo days, the Delta pilots had the new "frowning" widget in their hats. We have recently gone back to the old widget.

I've been wondering this myself...I know for a fact that MANY employees have been pushing for one for quite some time...they didn't do anything for the 75th anniversary, but since they're repainting the entire fleet, now is the perfect time to do a retrojet...I still dream of one day seeing the old Friendship livery on a 757...

I believe Northwest's hat emblem still says "U.S. Air Mail" around the logo's inner circle. A carry over from NW's earliest days.

Are the uniform wings different?

Alot of guys sport the "old" Widget wings and hat emblems now, especially alot of the old salts that remember 'how it was'. The 'soft curves' are still around though.

Mcdu, nice post. I'm in agreement with you, I think an airline should honor it's heritage. "Good on" UAL for doing so. My carrier (CO) has only a small display at the Training Center, but in general doesn't honor it's admittedly checkered past (i.e. the Lorenzo years).

Our hat emblem uses the current logo with wings attached to the square (of the logo). Prior to issuing this latest version of the uniform hardware, I did suggest using hardware identical to the red, white and blue eagle version (long since past).

The only thing on the wings is the globe like logo that says US Air Mail. The hat thing has Northwest Airlines around the outside in a red circle. I believe the blue center says US Air Mail, but it is not the same as the wings.
