Will they retain the rights to the VARIG name?

Is VARIG so tainted that it would be a liability to a new airline, or an existing smaller airline wanting to brand itself differently....to a much more well known brand?

Again, all depends on how the Brasillian public perceives it all.

Wasn't there once an airline named Nordeste which later became part of the Varig Group and was later fully integrated into the airline RG? This would be kind of a step backwards, to adopt the name of an airline which merged with them and has disappeared for a while, wouldn't it?

Same paint scheme as Varig, I believe they were/are an affiliated company. Don't know if they had their own operating certificate or not, or if they are still flying. Any Brazilian a.netters have any further information

I don't think they will change.
I like Nordeste. But Varig is known worldwide.

If they change their name it will be like when Prince changed his name, do you remember? ...the former artist known as Prince. Nordeste, the former airline known as Varig!

Gosh I don't get this one. Varig is such a well-known name. Nordeste simply means "Northeast". If I'm correct, yes it was it's own airline which served northeast Brasil and then integrated into Varig. There was also "Rio Sul" which is part of RG.

I guess since the US airline Northwest flies worldwide, why not? I look forward to what Felipe can tell us. What is your source, Lawndart?

The information on the additional 16 aircraft (B737's) has been going on for some time now, and yes it depends on the issue of the company's new operation license. Perhaps changing the name to Nordeste will help regain the internal route license quicker who knows. After all Nordeste did fly under the Varig logo.

There is also a potential order for up to 50 Embraer jets to be funded by BNDES waiting for the same issue.

For international flights though I would think the name Varig will probably remain. It is known worldwide and if your were going to change a famous known name, I would think that it would probably have some reference to Brazil within any new name. Otherwise who can identify with it outside of Brazil, after all VarigLOG still exists, why keep that name, its easy, the name Varig is well known.

The original Nordeste flew mainly B737 and some ERJ145's in the Northeast area of the country to SP and Rio.

It's actually quite simple. Old Varig retained the Nordeste brand and the permission to fly CGH-BPS after the auction. Old Varig cannot fly as Varig anymore, since the brand belongs now to the New Varig. I haven't heard of Nordeste acquiring new aircrafts and I don't believe they will, since they don't have the capital. I think the news got mixed up with the fact that the New Varig is operating 16 aircrafts, if I'm not mistaken.

That's a misleading information.. the new RG will not change its name to Nordeste that's pathetic..

Nordeste will be the name of the old RG, the one that kept all the debths.. and has just one aircraft supposed to be flying CGH-BPS route.. This airline will change its name to Nordeste...

You guys should be more cautious when reading this type of news..

News reports........ what else...

Nothing has come up over here in the Brazilian Press..

Just to explain:

Varig routes and airport assets, become part of NV Participations. NV still runs RG operations (FRA, EZE, CCS, BOG and domestic network) with 3 M11 and 12 733. Varig will run flights mainly from their new domestic Hub (CGH). HQ is in Rio de Janeiro, operations in Sao Paulo.

Non airport assets (Training Center, HQ) and one route (was CGH-BPS now GIG-BPS) stayed with Varig Transport Services. They will change name to Nordeste and fly up to 16 planes during the next 3 years. They will change HQ from Salvador to Rio de Janeiro as well as their Hub from SSA to GIG. Nordeste will keep all the actions against Brazilian Government (as well as all huge debits against Varig).

And what's about VRG Linhas Aéreas? All aircraft with "Varig-Titels" were operated by this new airline but with crews leased from Varig.

No aircraft flies with Rio-Sul and Nordeste.

The link to the original Reuters news story is as below:

Interestingly, however, a correction was issued the next day, removing the quote about the name change, as follows:

Reuters is one of the premier news bureaus, Dellatorre, how much more cautious can I be?

Can someone explain something to me.

RG Is flying 15 planes (3 MD11s and 12 737s I believe) and they have a few dozen flights a day. So they are clearly operating and they must be operating under a valid airline certificate.

What is this that I keep on hearing that they are waiting for an airline certificate to add the 16 planes and more frequencies? What am I missing? Why can't they just operate the extra planes under their existing certificate?

Thanks for anyone that can help explain.

Baron, RG is really flying but under a special approval from ANAC. Even Varig, they never received a valid airline certification because they are even OLDER than the old issuer (DAC) replaced nowadays by ANAC.
They can't add more planes because the special approval has limits, one of them is just 15 planes and the need to obtain the formal certificate.

If you have any further question or doubt, let me know.
