The last two FDX arrivals were A300's.

I'm not sure if this was the flight in question, but from the looks of the flight path, it seems they attempted to land on 14R and went around:

Chicago Tribune said plane was on Runway 9R/27L (which one?).

Quote:
9:02 AM: A Fed Ex Cargo plane arriving to O'Hare around 6:30 a.m. slid off one of the airport's runway, leaving its left tire and nose gear stuck in the mud, Chicago Department of Aviation spokeswoman Wendy Abrams said.

The runway, 9 Right 27 Left, was closed while crews worked to remove the plane — expected to take at least an hour, she said.

No injuries were reported but Abrams said the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the incident.

"It won't have a major effect on air traffic, since the majority of flights in and out of O'Hare are closed today," she said.

Not a good day to fly today (nore was it yesterday).

Well I was on uniTED 1588 from LAS to ORD last night during the height of the storm. Channel 9 was full of interesting chatter. Moderate chop at all altitudes west of the Mississippi. Loved the roller coaster ride. Pilots did an awesome job getting that A320 to come to a safe stop. We came in on 9R and with full reversers we used up most of the runway. I think he blew all the snow off the runway as well.

With this first storm of the season, how many total incidents have there been?

I'm glad to hear no one is hurt.

Chicago was not a fun place to be this morning. I took a bus from Madison to Downtown Chicago earlier today and all the people going to Ohare and Midway were all obviously dissapointed. Even our bus got stuck in the snow and had to be pulled out. Then about an hour later we had to swerve out of the way of a car tailspinning out of control. Within 5 min six other cars did the exact same thing. Why are people so stupid that they can't slow down when there's almost a foot of snow on the ground?

These idiots can't even drive in fair weather! Yet, they do anyway, and people still wonder why there are so many accidents on the roads. Like I always say, "if you can't drive, DONT! Stay home or take a bus, or carpool..." And by "can't drive," I am not referring to carrying a license!

Now coming back to the topic of the FedEX plane landing at ORD and messing things up even more, why wasn't the plane diverted to a different location? Or is this just another dumb question providing there was nowhere else to land?

Probably because they had legal landing minimums and crosswind components, and planned a normal landing. The fact that they ended up with the nosegear and one maingear in the mud doesn't necessarily backdrive the conclusion that the landing never should have been attempted.

I didn't see it mentioned in the media report linked above, but many assume that an aircraft in the mud automatically means they slid there when it could have just as easily occurred during an otherwise normal taxi-in when a turn was misjudged or some other reason than an out-of-control slide.

I came in to work even though they were accepting cancellation calls for overtime. It was like a ghost town. Then I ate breakfeast and I have never seen the gates so empty before. T5 had no planes untill the 24 hour airline(MX) showed up with 2 planes.

I have to go in early again, this time im dreading it! ORD will be swapped with people!

On a more serious note, I work in the USAirways (west) SOC and it was a hell of a day today, especially for the Airbus guys. I was luckily on the Boeing side today, and we only sent one 757 to ORD today (no 733's scheduled to ORD).

Yikes. Glad all ended up ok. I was booked on a 7:37am UA flight from ICT-ORD tomorrow (Dec 2), but they already cancelled it (My guess is because of loads, because I got onto the 6:07am flight and every other flight ICT-ORD is fine so far, none cancelled).

Some crazy stuff in Chicago today, so I heard. Glad I didn't leave tonight like I wanted to originally!

Chances are due to crews and aircraft being out of rotation, you will see many cancelled or delayed flights through out the weekend.

I didn't hear of the second a/c strike, what was the tail #? Just so you get the story straight, the a/c stuck the two deice trucks not the other way around. They are lucky no one was killed Friday morning. FX flight crews are just unblievable, all the equipment that they tear up (don't get me started).

Fair enough, as you went on to explain, it could have been a miscalculation or some other form of pilot error I suppose. Hey, wasn't it earlier this year when WN 1248 went off the runway at MDW? I know that bad weather was a factor, but what ever was determined to be the cause of that wreck, wx, pilot error, both?

A year ago this month. Final report will be out in 2007, and as the investigation is still technically in progress, I can't comment...

Yeah, that topic was all over A.net for months on end; then it dipped below the radar and I just didn't recall hearing if any conclusion was reached. Apparently it has not. Thanks  Smile

It's usually about 12-18 months after an accident before NTSB has their final report out. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later...
