Excess Radiation Found On Finnair A319 At Moscow

Sat Dec 02, 2006 11:47 pm

Per the article and other news reports in the USA and elsewhere, today Russian authorities have detained a A319 operated by Finnair at Schenvenko airport in Moscow due to high levels of certain radioactive materials found in tests. The airplane had 70 people on board, it had operated from Berlin to Helsinki then to Moscow. Apparently the Russian police and transportation authorities are examining many aircraft at Moscow and other international airports for radioactive materials that may have used in the recent poisoning and death of the Ex-Russian agent in London recently. Most likely such materials, were from government sources like Russia, due to their rarity and difficulty to produce.

Apart from the fact you can buy Polonium-210 on the open market without a license and its pretty easy to get contaminated with this stuff by accident as a result.

I guarantee that this is going to go on and on and on, as more planes are checked, more will be found to be contaminated - and I can pretty much guarantee that 99% of these aircraft wont have anything to do with anything.

Polonium-210 occurs in nature in an extremely small doses. And it is true that cigarettes contain extremely low, almost non-detectable dose of pollonium-210. Smokers are not in danger of becoming permanent residents six feet under due to radiation

Also, important to realise that Finnair actually carry radioactive materials classed as "Dangerous goods" on a regular basis.

@ Dallasnewark

Maybe radiation is no danger, but cancer will do the job....

Second testing proved no radioactivity.

The plane is on its way back to HEL - should be landing here in 40 minutes.

Low radioactive materials, like hospital equipments in this case, are carried on planes all the time.

I love the media. Shevchenko Airport. Taras Shevchenko was a Ukrainian Poet guys - no airport named after him in Russia!
EDIT: They fixed it in the article, still amusing. All of these planes with radiation. Scary.

He is also a footballer currently playing poorly for Chelsea.

Good to hear that A319 is on it's way back!  Smile
