AC->QF: Bags Checked Through At LAX?

Tue Dec 05, 2006 6:04 am

Hey all,

I'm travelling YVR-LAX-SYD in February '07 with AC and QF. YVR-LAX on AC and then QF LAX-SYD. I have received conflicting info from AC and QF customer service about whether my bags can be checked straight through from YVR-SYD so that I won't have to claim and recheck them in LAX. Can anyone in the know, or who has transferred from AC to QF in LAX, provide some insight??

Much appreciated!

I'm not aware of the AC/QF connection specifically, but every time I fly to LAX or another US airport from YVR, both passenger and all bags are pre-screened through US customs in YVR. Then generally you don't see your checked luggage until arrival in SYD, for example. I imagine they can tag them straight through, but make sure you ask the agent in YVR and/or check the codes on your luggage. If it says LAX AC(xxx) then below: SYD QF(yyy) on them, you're golden.

I believe AC and QF have an interlining agreement. Is this all on one ticket? If not, then AC won't through check it regardless of what interlining agreements they have.

If it's all on 1 PNR, then you should be OK.

even if it's 2 separate tickets, they can do it if they have interline agreement

While technically they might be able to, AC's policy is they won't.

http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/checkin.html
"Effective June 1, 2006 customers traveling on two separate tickets, connecting from Air Canada to another airline will only be checked in as far as the destination on their Air Canada ticket, with the same rule applying to their baggage.

You must obtain your boarding pass and check in any baggage by the check-in deadline, and be available at the boarding gate by the boarding gate deadline."

Actually, come to think of it, if your trip is all on one ticket, you're OK - bags can be checked, if not, you'll have to check in and drop your bags in LAX.

what a stupid policy! I don't see where's the problem for them. I did that several times on other airlines and it takes generally 2 or 3 minutes only, for the agent, to check your bag until your final destination.
Does AC apply also this policy for connections between AC and another *A carrier ?

My thoughts exactly, the policy doesnt really make sence. I'm flying to LHR with AC and connecting to ACC with BA and I don't want to have to go claim my luggage and recheck them in at LHR. Would be far to much of a hastle. Getting the boarding pass for the onward leg after the flight is no problem as I have done that many times, but I dont see why they cannot check the luggage straight through.

If all segments are all on 1 ticket, then there is no issue. IIRC AC has an E-ticket interline agreement, so it shouldn't be a problem having the whole trip on the same ticket.

Might not seem logical on the surface, however there are two valid business reasons I can see for this.

First, at most airports a private 3rd party vendor handles interline transfer bags with either the sending carrier or receiving carrier being charged for the transfer. In the case of non linked reservations why should AC interline to another airlines as its not received any pro-rata revenue of the connecting flight? A second reason could very well be that interlining also does technically open the airline up for liability incase of loss or damage. Airlines do behind the scenes often negotiable to share claims for bags that are interlined.

Its simpler and cheaper for the airline to just carry the bags within its own network unless connection flight happen to be booked as a single itinerary.

Thanks for the responses everybody. The flights are all on one old-school paper ticket so, if I read your replies right, that should mean that AC will be able to check the bags straight through. That's definitey a relief as our connection time would be a bit tight if we had to claim and recheck!

Thanks again,

YVR99, you should be fine especially considering that you'll be clearing US customs and immigration in YVR itself. I believe if you'd be connecting in the states from another country, you'd have to claim, pass customs and recheck.

I can relate to this because I was booked on various tickets and various airlines for my trip from China to India this past August. I flew to China from the states on business and then booked a leisure trip to India to visit the folks and to keep the trip cost low, I had to come back to East Asia to fly back to the states.

Just for fun, this was my routing for the month long trip:
ORD-NRT-PEK on company paid ticket
TSN-SZX-PEK on intra-China flight paper ticket and then
PEK-DEL-MAA-CMB-BKK on personal ticket and then
BKK-NRT-ORD on company paid ticket

The journey to India started in SZX and I had to claim, pass customs and immigration in PEK and then do it again in DEL because of the domestic connection. On the way back, I was able to check my bags from MAA all the way to ORD, even though it was on 2 separate tickets, 3 different airlines over 4 sectors. Don't you just love how far civil aviation has come...  bigthumbsup

Well I flew the same route with AS and QF in February.

AS checked me all the way through, however you have to collect your bag at LAX and dump it in a bag drop for the next sector. So it was kinda like having the bag checked through, except I had to hump it part way  Smile
I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!
