KLM orders 747-400's

Wed Feb 24, 1999 6:54 pm

KLM has ordered 4 new 747-400's. While others are cancelling 747 orders, KLM's looking forward to expanding the connection with NW, Alitalia and Continental.

I wonder what fate awaits their older 747's (if any) ? Would Martinair/NorthWest/Alitalia inherit them ?

just expansion

The purchase is just for expansion. The older 747-300 are not to be replaced for a while. First up for replacement are the MD-11's. (still an interesting question...) But also not on short term. A Dutch newspaper was mentioning the Airbus family, but I guess they have the same resources like we do. It's all speculation. The only thing certain is the purchase of 4 747-400's. Period. The rest is gossip.

This is great news for the 747 line. Way to go KLM. A while back there was a guy whose father worked for KLM or something like that . Maybe he knows about the MD-11s?

That guy with a dad working for KLM is me!!
Even KLM-personnel doesn't know about KLM's airplane strategy. The 747-400 order came unannounced, like all the other KLM orders as the 737-800 and -900. They're very good at keeping it a secret until the last minute. It's just a simple 'wait and see' case with KLM.

Are they going to be Combi versions?

That would be really neat, making KLM Increase there 13 Cs making it increase their lead in the world as the largest 747-400C operator.

747-300 Freighter

Thu Feb 25, 1999 2:41 am

Isn't KLM the people that converted that -300 over to a freighter. As far as I know that is the only freighter conversion on a -300 flying
