Which Planes Do Sports Teams Have Or Charter?

Wed Jul 12, 2000 1:35 pm

I have seen that some teams in the NHL, NFL, NBA and the major league baseball teams will often have their own plane to use to fly team members to various cities, so that they don't have to worry about chartering a flight from their airline or going through the hassle of a scheduled airline flight. If so, what aircraft type do they have?

For other teams that do not have their own planes, would they charter a plane owned by their sponsoring airline, or just go on a regular scheduled flight to fly to cities across the US and Canada? If they do charter a plane from their sponsoring airline, what type of aircraft from which airline will they use? Answers appreciated!

From what I've seen it seems almost exclusively three plane types. 111's, 737-200's and 727-200's. -Ryan

Midwest Express is one of the most active and sought out players in the market for team charters. Most recently, Midwest Express flew the New Jersey Devils and the Stanley Cup from Dallas to Teterboro, NJ. Midwest Express also flies the Indiana Pacers, Carolina Hurricaines, and Milwaukee Brewers to name a few.

The aircraft used by MIDEX is N302ME which is a DC-930 with club seating, electric outlet access at most rows, and specialized, catered service.

Usually if they do not have there own plane they will charter the airline that sponsors them. Example- Delta charters the Atlanta Braves, and with them the aircraft usually varies.I have seen videos where the braves came in on Boeing 727's,Boeing757's, and Boeing 767's. I also know that the Houston Astors charter with Continental, The Arizona Diamondbacks with America West. And I am pretty sure that the Florida Marlines charter with American.
BTW, does anyone know what airline the San Diego Padres charter?

The Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA?) own their own 737-200, and I know that the STL Rams (NFL) "own" a TWA 727-200. They technically charter, but it has the Rams' logos painted on it. I'm fairly certain the Marlins (MLB) charter an AA MD-80 most of the time, and I'm pretty sure that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (MLB) charter with WN and use a 737-500.
Does anyone know what the Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL) do? I want to say they charter an AirTran DC-9-30, but I'm not sure...

I saw the Dallas Stars jet take-off from DTW during Stanley Cup Finals a few years ago. It was either a DC9, MD80, or 727. Can't recall exactly. This didn't look like a commercial airliner dressed up in a team logo, this looked like a full-fledged team-owned bird.

The Dallas Stars do not own an aircraft. All of their flying is done on a charter basis. The aircraft you saw was from a charter company that used to fly the Nashville Predators and the Dallas Stars. However, that company folded last year (mid-season) forcing both teams to scramble in order to find a replacement charter.

Michigan State Chartered a TWA DC9 coming back from the Final 4.
Detroit Pistons have a DC9 of their own- Round Ball One
Red Wings and Tigers and the Little Ceaser's guy share a DC9 (used to have a 111)

I know back in the "Golden Era" (the Jordan years) the Bulls had their own 727, which I assume they still own.

Of the planes I've actually seen, The Washington Wizards have their own 737-200, I know the Miami Heat and the Florida Marlins use (or used) Miami Air (all chartered 727's) and I have seen the NY Knicks 737-300 many times. The NY Giants charter from Continental Airlines, I believe.

Northwest charters aircraft for about 11 NBA (basketball) teams and a few more NFL teams. The NBA charters use 727-200s with club seating and other special amenities (I would imagine extra legroom.) NW's last 747-100 is also used to charter the NFL teams flights, as well as DC-10s, utilized by teams such as the Oakland Raiders, Browns, and Vikings.

Few players fly commercial anymore, with some notable exceptions. A few years ago at LGA, I saw Lisa Leslie get off a NW flight from DTW with some of her teammates. Also, when the NBA's Timberwolves and Kings played in Japan, the Wolves flew Northwest from MSP to NRT. (I believe the Kings also flew NW to SFO.)
