It looks great in TWA colours. TWA was a great supporter of the MD-80, it took delivery of the last ones built.
The typical MD-80 airline is of course American, which has by far the biggest fleet (280, that's more than 25% of the total built).
It never seems to fit in place of the Continental 737-oriented fleet, although it looks quite nice in these colours.
Its a pity US Airways never repainted any in their new colours, that would look great, don't you think? Can't anyone make up how it would look like with a Photoshop program?
But last week I saw the prettiest MD-80 around, while on holiday in Fort Lauderdale: in Air Jamaica colours ! Great.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

American, Alitalia, Continental, SAS, Delta.

NOT US Airways. Those MD80's should be scrapped. They are nasty.

I like Delta's MD-88s. They have the most advanced cockpits of the MD-80 line, and they looked great in the original Delta Widget colors. I was at the airport this morning to see my sister off to Connecticut. As I was walking through the terminal, I glimpsed a Delta MD-88 in their brand new colors. It's sort of boring. The all-white upper fuselage really needs something else on it, maybe they should repaint the dark blue cheatlines back on. Other than that, Delta's MD-88s are quiet, clean, and comfortable, with more legroom than their 738s.

I like DL's MD-88s, CO's, TWA's, and I liked NW's when they had them. AA's c/s looks cool period- I love bare metal.
I don't like USAirways's MD-81s/82s much. All of their planes are damn near being the prototypes, and it shows. They're not too comfortable from the inside, and rather noisy throughout the cabin, with a weak takeoff run (MD-81s use JT8D-209s rated at 19k- MD-83s and some MD-88s use JT8D-219 at 21k, and the difference shows). It's a pity they didn't invest in newer MD-80 series a/c (MD-88 would've suited them perfectly, and MD-87 could have easily replaced DC-9 and 732).
So my vote stands at DL, CO, and TWA out of carriers that operate them now.
BTW- Did anyone else think that Valujet's MD-81 looked really cool?

Mine would have to be TWA(paint scheme) and Midwest Express with the 2-2 setup. The USAirways MD-80s are rather cramped(in coach). The same is truewith US DC-9-31s.

Let's not forget AeroMexico- they're a great airline and the DC-9/MD-80 family is a major part of their fleet.

Why Are The Doors Open On The TX Int. DC-9s?

Thu Jul 13, 2000 6:10 am

I've never seen any planes with open doors that are opposite the jetway. I suppose they could have loaded the food right into the galley, but why are all 3 airplane's doors open? I remember seeing a NW A320 with the same door opened and the escape slide deployed in an issue of Airways. I suppose the technological wizardry of the A320 automatically deployed the slide while the DC-9's are deployed manually?

AMERICAN !

If you fly American Airlines within the United States chances are you are on a Super 80. American has the largest fleet of MD-80's with over 250 of them currently in service, and it was an early customer for the type. The first one was delivered in 1984. I think that the retirement of the type should start soon, now that the oldest one is already 16 years old, I imagine that in ten to fifteen years from now they will be removed from service and replaced with NG737's. As you may know, the MD-80 is now out of production.
I flew on an MD-80 three months ago from La Guardia to Chicago at the end of the day when the sun was slowly going down, it was my nicest flight on that type. The aircraft was already modified with the new seats, which looked a lot nicer than what it used to be, and the flight was smooth. The Super 80 rises quickly and quietly. That's what I get on most of my domestic flights with American.

I just love the look of the SAS Md-80 in the new colour scheme with the orange engines and blue tail.

Midwest Express

since we're talking about the fav. airlines using the md-80s, YX is the best. Their service, seating, and route structure is fantastic (especially if youre living in MKE).

Note To MD-90: Open Doors

Fri Jul 14, 2000 3:11 am

The door opposite the pax entry door on DC-9s is the service door. This is where all the food and beverages and other items for the flight are loaded.

BWIA's MD83s are really great planes. They take off powerfully, literally rocket off to cruise altitudes and are smooth and very quiet inside (save for the aft areas). BWIA has 5 of the type, some of which are now being painted in the airline's new steelpan paint scheme. My most recent flight in one was last week in one of the repainted Mad Dogs - it looked simply awesome and I was quite surprised to see it, as I did not know that any had been repainted.

The MD80 series is the most utilized type in the Caribbean, with planes in use with BWIA, Air Jamaica (2 MD83), Air Aruba (2 MD88), ALM (3 MD82) and Surinam Airways (1 ?MD81/82, previously 1 MD87). Of the others, JM's planes look the most fascinating with the rainbow colour scheme.

I like the SAS. We flew on one from Copenhagen to Karup in Denmark. Because the country is so small the flight got to cruising altitude the biscuits and orange juices/coffee/tea was served then it was all downhill again. Shortest flight I've ever been on
