Going To/Thru CLE 12-7? Heavy Snow Warning

Thu Dec 07, 2006 9:20 am

It may be the anniversary of the "Day that will live in infamy" tomrrow, but it will be an infamous weather day in CLE it looks like on Thursday.

Forecasts are now calling for 12 to 18 inches of snow in the Cleveland area, with the higher amounts where squalls persist. This could cause major delays/cancellations in/out of CLE tomrrow due to this approaching storm. Plus with the new deicing system still cutting its teeth, it could cause even more delays.

Check up with your airline tomrrow morning for any delays/cancellations. It looks to be a fun day for CO here in CLE.

Yeah, I heard yesterday was a bit of a cluster. Hopefully things will improve tomorrow!

Well lots of snow and the new de-icing situation not up to par, should make for a fun filled day to say the least.

"A bit" is an understatement. I wasn't here for it, but heard a few horror stories. I've heard that CO deicers may take some of the responsibility tomorrow.

Again, an understatement.  Big grin

I knew we'd pay for that gorgeous weather in November....

The forecasts I've heard are for heavy lake effect snow. Usually effects the east side far, far worse than the west side, so good chance the airport will be A-OK.

Winter Storm Warnings are up for Lorain County --> eastward. Lorain county is normally not in the lake effect area. According to http://www.newsnet5.com this is going to be a more general snow, affecting more than the snow belt.

And from what the Ops manager is saying up here, we're looking at a foot of snow at least at Hopkins tomorrow.

Nope, they took our jobs away! So we dont de-ice...You can blame CLE ramp management and hub ops for that.

I'm kind of confused as to who imposed this new deicing procedure. I understand the airport wanted the deicing centralized, but did the airport mandate the airlines use a specific company instead of their own people or was it voluntary. If it was imposed, shame on the airport. IMO the airlines should have a choice as to who does their handlings, in this case deicing. I get the feeling the airport mandated it from a post in another thread saying "United employees were begging to do it." If the airlines were mandated to do this, the airlines should be fuming about this...because this is ridiculous.

Ok...back to topic...hopefully a few diversions to TOL...Only been 1 CO jet in TOL in the last couple years...would be great for more  Smile

Good luck to anyone traveling tomorrow. I'm going CLE-EWR a week from today (12/13) so hopefully everything is good that day.
At least it is hitting now and not closer to when most college students are traveling home. Or anytime next week, as that is a big week for finals, and the one time you don't want class to be canceled.

It can snow all it wants tomorrow as long as 12/22 is crystal clear. Some snow on the ground would be nice to see on landing though.

Yeah it was nice to see some snow on the ground two days ago. I just hope it stays clear over the holidays. Looks like it is going to warm a little next week and all we will have is rain, so I should be ok on the 13th.

The EPA told CLE they had to have a remote area for de-icing so that the fluid would not run into drains and the creek. The city then asked Continental to do the de-icing but some folks in Hub Ops thought it would be too much of a hassel...and now a company that has no idea what their doing is spraying planes.

The company IS experienced in deicing-in Montreal. In fact, heard tonight that some of their more experienced deicers were to be in town for this winter even to make sure the cluster of tuesday isn't repeated, and to maybe train the newbies a little better.

And forgive CLE757's anger-he's about as anti-management as anyone can get.  Smile

The PD reported that the city is spending almost half a million on fixes for the new glycol system. I'd love to read the contract; it sounds as if CLE specified the system instead of the system performance.

It looks like we are going to get slammed unless the winds change unexpectedly:

"A lake effect snow warning remains in effect until 6 am EST
Friday.

Lake effect snow bands will move onshore from Lake Erie during the
early morning hours Thursday and continue through Friday morning.
Snow accumulations for the Thursday morning rush hour will be 1
to 3 inches and roads will likely be slick. The snow will be heavy
at times Thursday into Thursday night with a chance of thunder
snow. Winds will also be gusty which will cause blowing and
drifting snow. Snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are expected
on Thursday... with an additional 3 to 7 inches Thursday night. The
greatest totals will be south and east of Cleveland and some areas
can expect storm total snowfall of a foot or more by Friday
morning.

If you will be traveling across the region be prepared for rapid
changes in Road and visibility conditions. Roads across the
warning region will become snow covered. Stay tuned to NOAA
Weather Radio and other radio and TV stations for further details
or updates."

Experienced?...thats a joke!...3hrs to get de-iced?....Lots of Flights are being cancelled right now, and its getting worse..The former de-icers are just watching this and laughing, but remember CO hub ops wanted this!

My question is why can't each of the respective airlines do their *own* deicing at this pad?

Why am I stuck going to college at BGSU, 110 miles from my home near Cleveland? Man, I think Toledo and vincity barely gets snow out here...

We've already gotten about 4 inches here on the far west side, and it's supposed to keep snowing till mornig. This is NOT gonna be fun tonight!

I know this being the west side we usually get far less than the east side of the state.

This is weird. Padua early dismissed @ 1:30 due to poor road conditions, and I'm home later then I'd usually be  Sad

Strongsville also earlied @ 1:50 (and for all of those asking why I'm posting this, these are west suburbs/schools that don't see a lot of snow.)
