Please Help Identify United DC-8 And Year

Wed Jul 12, 2000 3:52 pm

I have a video that a friend of a friend shot awhile ago from inside a United DC-8-70 series. The flight was UAL762 from ORD to JFK, anybody know what years this could cover? Also, the number located on the nose section (fleet #?) is 2879. Can you help me get an N Number for trying to spot this plane that I assume UPS is operating. Thanks for all help! -Ryan

Not sure if this is it, but it's as close as I can find:

Delivered to United on March 21, 1968 as DC-8-61 N8079U msn 45947, ln 341. Converted to DC-8-71. Sold September 1990.

Last known user of the aircraft was Emery Worldwide. The aircraft was written off in a crash on February 16, 2000 at Sacramento-Mather Field. (SMF)

Well I checked... I am assuming fleet number 2879 corresponds with N8079U... that is usually how UA's fleet numbers worked.

N8079U went on to fly with Emery Worldwide under the same registration and was written off at Sacramento Mather on the 16th of February 2000.

Here is the accident synopsis from the NTSB, all 3 crew members were killed.

Other info, it was delivered new to UA on March 21, 1968 as a DC-8 Super 61, and was later converted to a Super 71

Thanks so much for the effort with finding the reg and the post result. You guys truly make this site the ultimate place for getting info. I can't believe that happens to be N8079U which is so vividly burnt into my mind of the cars burning, very sad. -Ryan

The 7/89 OAG shows UA 762 D8S SJC-ORD-JFK; the 7/90 shows UA 762 as a SLC-ORD-JFK 737-300, and in the 7/87 and 7/88 UA762 doesn't go to JFK.
