DFW- Founder's Plaza Closing?

Thu Dec 07, 2006 2:34 pm

I went out to Founder's today and there were signs saying that Carbon Rd would be closed as of Jan 3rd. Is this permanent because of the new taxiway or just a temp. situation? Anyone have good ideas for new spotting areas?

Carbon road will be clsd permanently. Founders plaza will be moved to a new location on the airport. This is due to the new taxiway system going in. It will be south of 17C/35C and 17R/35L.

I'm sure I'll enjoy the new park, but it won't be the same. One of my most vivid memories is sitting for hours at Founder's Plaza on September 12 (the day after). The lack of movement...and the silence!

A group of AA employees visited the park while I was there, and many tears were shed. That extraordinary day at DFW is burned in my mind.  crying

Have there been talks about the new location then? I wish they would have had something in store before closing the plaza, because Saturday afternoons have turned into a popular choice for my three year old and I to waste away 2 or 3 hours.

Wow this is some news. I was lucky to visit there and loved it. Hope the new location is as good.

From what I have heard, it will be relocated on the north end of DFW. As long as it's still relatively close to landing traffic, similar to its present location, it should be great. Plus, arrivals from the north are more common than the south.

I've been going there for about 10 years and love it! Somehow I doubt the new location will be ready by January 3, but maybe they've already started to work on it.

That's great if it is to be on the north side. To me, that has always been the only problem with FP- that it was on the south side. You have to wait for days like today to get some good closeup looks. I hope it is near a busy taxiway as well.

Founder's Plaza, at least in my experience, is one of the coolest places in the U.S. to sit and watch planes. Sure, some will carp and complain that all you ever see all day long is shiny silver MD80s. That notwithstanding, though, it is getting next to impossible to get as close to departing and landing aircraft as D/FW's Founder's Plaza allows!

Okay I feel kinda left out on this one... I worked for DL at DFW for 4 years, and have lived in the metroplex for most of my life... And I have never heard anyone say anything about this park at DFW... Anyways... to make a long story short where is it located...?

From their website: http://www.dfwairport.com/visitor/founders.htm

Founder’s Plaza is located at 2829 30th Street (Carbon Rd.) and is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to midnight. To visit Founders Plaza, enter DFW Airport from the south (Hwy 183), exit to the right on Airfield Drive before you reach the entry plazas. Turn right and continue on Airfield Drive past the Administration Building. Turn left on 30th Street (Carbon Rd.) and continue until you reach Founder's Plaza on the right.

I have not really done any spotting at any other airports, so this make me proud, but at the same time scares me that the new one won't be any good.

I've spent many an hour at Founder's Plaza with a handheld scanner. Did lots of my best thinking and deciding of big life decisions there.

It's a pretty special place for me and I don't think it'll be the same anywhere else. The view of Terminal E is part of what makes it special to me and moving it to the north side or the west side just won't feel right.

Well, I hope they put it on the north side. I liked it where it is, but if they're gonna move it, at least put it where the traffic is more visible, and not 500+ feet above me!!!!

I would like to perhaps see a NW site. That way we can get to see all the big boys who only use the west side.

There is actually some pretty good empty space just by the SW tarmac (I don't know the correct term) where the planes line up for northbound take offs. The street is not marked from inside the airport, but is called Construction Ln on the west Airfield Dr. Signs say construction vehicles only, but I drive up through there all the time- I just don't dare stop.

I also hope that they make it bigger. On nice days, the place is really packed.

This also saddens me to hear about the closing of the current Founder's Plaza. I've spent numerous hours at the current one, and days upon days at the original plaza, or grassy hill as it was prior to the constructed parking lot.
While living in the Metroplex from 1991-3, I spent all of my final months there in that parking lot, getting into aviation so much that it led to my becoming a flight dispatcher. Great memories of watching AA DC-10s, DL L1011s and trying to figure out how a wine cooler company had their own plane (Sun Country-don't ask!)...

Here's hoping that the new founders plaza, or whatever they decide to call it, is placed in a spot that will be beneficial to all.

That does stink that they're closing this. I wonder if they would consider putting something just to the east/northeast of the UPS areas. That would be a perfect spot to catch all of the cargo freighters and the widebodies on their way to Int'l. Terminal D.

To me, Founders Plaza wasn't that great. As many have said, we have a LOT more south wind at DFW than north wind so that part of the location stunk. The only good part about it was that if the planes were landing from north to south on the VERY far east runway, don't know the number of it, but it is east of the old DL hangar; you could get great shots of those aircraft taxiing right in front of you while they were heading to the terminals.

Can you imagine how much $$$$$ DFW would make if they would actually build and charge people a fee to a great viewing area in the very middle of the airport? That is the problem with DFW and many other airports. They are not that "user (or spotter)- friendly", especially since 9/11.

I would GLADLY pay a fee every time if I could get a GREAT location to shoot planes, similar to the Queens Building at Terminal 3 at LHR. I paid a fee at ZRH as well and it was awesome..............

What DFW ought to do is building a viewing area on top of the LH and BR cargo facilities on the west side of the airport and charge a fee to people to visit the place. I guarantee you that $$$ could be made there.

Pay? How much should they charge? I don't think I would be for a fee-based spotting location unless it was REALLY good.
