Inter City Commutes By Airlines Employees

Sat Dec 09, 2006 8:28 am

Hi,

I was wondering if all or only pilots and flight attendants can commute to the airport they are based at. What about check in agents? If an employee say lives in Berlin and works in Frankfurt can they just fly there every morning at the expenses of the airline?

Thanks

I commute with a ramp agent from PHX to EWR weekly. We also had a ramp guy commute (double commute) from PHX to FLL via IAH.

Anything is possible in the airline industry. As long as you show up for work on time, the company could care less.

Also, when commuting (pilot, flight attendant, any airline employee) it is done so, space available, at your expense (if it is not free) and on your time.

Yep, we had a few rampers here in YYC that actually lived in YVR.

Commuting is a normal part of the airline industry in the USA. I believe up to 40% of pilots commute and a similar number of flight attendants. Mechanics, dispatchers, and ramp agents get in on the mix too. It allows you to maintain your life where you are rooted but still have that job you want. It can get pretty tough when the flights are loaded during the holidays. Check out airline flights from hub to hub and you will find tons of commuters. Detroit to Minneapolis is a big one.

Yea...people in all job categories commute.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

C8 had a mid-level employee commute/jumpseat MKE-MDW on a Saab 340 five days per week. Sounded like hell to me, but anything is possible in aviation.

It is becoming harder and harder as there are more people commuting (due to industry dislocations) and less space available (due to increased flight loads).

The system will break down soon.

4 on, 3 off. Kind of senior and trades his hours around to get this.

When I worked for FL in MKE I commuted between MKE and GRR. Depending on my schedule I could spend 5 nights a week at home if I wanted to. Now I commute between ATL and FNT and spend about 10 nights a month at home.
Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

You'd be amazed at the commutes that some pilots and flight attendants put themselves through - it doesn't surprise me at all that rampers do it as well. I have flown with one flight attendant who commutes from Bucharest, and know quite a few who commute from Paris and Brussels. In the airline industry, anything is possible. Here at CO, we apparently have a captain who commutes from Cape Town!

Happy Holidays!

One of our co-workers commutes from JNB. I commuted to EWR from SYD for 3 years. Anything is possible. That and something to knock you out.

I speak to a few F/As and I know that quite a few do the Manchester to Heathrow/Gatwick commute, especially long haul crews where they're away for 3 or 4 days so the fly in, and fly out afterwards. I suppose its cheaper than living in London!

We have a guy that works on the ramp out here at LAS that lived in Sacramento. He'd fly down every week from OAK, work 3-4 days, and then fly back.

He's moved down here now, but he used to do it...

Drive to OAK from Sacramento, fly OAK-LGB-LAS on Sunday, and then fly back on either Thursday night or Friday morning.

I know a couple AA flight attendants based out of BOS-I that commute out of Paris, another one that commutes out of Spokane (SEA-DFW-BOS).

I flew CO from ACY to EWR when that operated to work in EWR for about 6 months... back and forth 4 days a week on an ATR... FUN!!!!!

I know a lot of flight crews that do it, but they have a little advantage... they can jumpseat.
