United Extra Flights To ANC?

Sun Dec 10, 2006 6:25 am

Hi,
I saw alot of extra United aircraft in Anchorage (ANC) lately. Such as 747-400 and 777. Does anyone know what these flights are about?

Thanks,

Fuel stops, perhaps? ORD-HKG is a likely suspect if so.

Edit: 895 did divert to ANC both yesterday and on Thursday.

They have all been diversions for the past several weeks. The flyertalk boards have been lit up about the unusally high number of diversions to ANC. Almost all of them have been due to mechanical reasons.

The two UA flights I referenced above were fuel. They filed the flight plan via ANC, and that is in fact what they flew.

Generally when an aircraft diverts, a new flight plan is filed. So watching Flytecomm may give the impression that it was planned all along.

The three diverted United flights to ANC I had my eye on in the past two weeks...the minimum delay was 4 hours. It doesn't take 4 hours to refuel an aircraft. The longest delay was 28 hours after United had to send a 777 up from SFO so passengers can continue a KIX-ORD flight.

Like I mentioned, FlyerTalk has been ablaze the past few weeks highlighting the maintenance issues with United's 747's and the unusally high number of diversions to Anchorage due to mechanical problems encountered inflight the past several weeks.
