UK Government Invests In Airbus Wing

Mon Dec 11, 2006 9:52 pm

The UK government has become the largest investor in a €50 million ($65 million) Airbus-led initiative to develop a more environmentally-friendly and more cost-effective wing.

Prudent investment in the country's technological base, I'd say. But not everyone may agree...

Either way, it looks like there's a desire in Whitehall to keep Britain in the forefront of wing design and the expectation of a continuing relationship with Airbus.

At least the British admit it.

Better then disguising it as a NASA project (composite wing).

I welcome the move cos were all skint!

Also a longer, but not really more informative BBC article on the subject.

Interesting that having a more efficient wing is no longer enough, now it has to be "green". I wonder if it better to have goals set out in the rather vague term "green", than that of efficiency, because either term can mean whatever the user wants it to mean.

The wording seems to me a bit odd and suggests that GoUK has a spot of bother assisting aerospace now that BAEs is not involved. It appears that this is not RLI.

I don't see your point. NASA projects are publicly available in most cases... many NASA innovations have found their way into Airbus aircraft. I doubt this project will be turned over to Boeing in the near future.

That said, in the grand scheme of things, its a minor investment. Sounds like the UK is trying to shore up Airbus relations after BAE backed out.

At least you won't see any for three days! rotfl

Meanwhile, back on topic.

Looks like it could be money well spent if Airbus keeps its centre of excellence for wings in the UK.
