Status of Willow Run Airport?

Tue Dec 12, 2006 3:38 am

I lived in Ypsilanti when I was a kid and remember going out to Willow Run and watching airplanes with for hours at a time. It's been over 20 years since I was last there and I'm sure a lot has changed.

Can anyone give me a rundown on what's happening at one of my favorite airports in the world?

Status of Willow Run Airport?

Tue Dec 12, 2006 3:58 am

Last time I visited Ypsilanti there were several cargo operations active there. According to their website http://www.willowrunairport.com/ they have 100,000 operations there annually. From what I saw, I believe it. Lots of old freighters.

The reason for my visit was to see the Yankee Air Museum. http://yankeeairmuseum.org Well worth the trip! thumbsup

When I was by there last summer, they were building a new museum, probably for expansion, and thus it was closed.

The airport itself looks about as worn as the cargo aircraft in and out of there.

I believe they've closed off a couple runways in the past couple years, I recall seeing lighted X's standing off the end of a couple runways when I drove around it.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Yes. Sadly, they lost several small aircraft under restoration, almost all their tools, parts and a large collection of artifacts. Good news is they saved all of their flying collection. IIRC they are to build a new facility, remaining at Willow Run.

a rundown on what's happening

1. Significant cargo operations at night.

2. Not in any way knocking your posting of this subject. I put a post up recently that probably would be of interest to you since you are asking about Willow Run.
