DL Begins JFK-ACC Today

Tue Dec 12, 2006 6:16 am

Does anyone know how initial loads are looking?

http://news.delta.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=10480

With tonight's addition, DL now has service to three African destinations. Good luck to them, and hopefully, there is yet more to come.

Is it the 767-300 with the special habitat for Humanity paint job? That's the aircraft used for the ATL-JNB inaugural.

Just looked on the DL website--wow, that is one empty plane. I hope loads pick up on this route--seems like there should be a lot of demand.

Sometimes the web doesn't give completely accurate numbers.

Also, I remember when I first flew JFK-DXB-JFK with EK...the route had started only a few weeks prior and the plane was 1/2 empty (A345)....look at that route now.....3 flights per day with 2-direct...all in 2 1/2 years... spin

Anyway, I hope DL does well on this route.. thumbsup

I spoke to a DL spokesperson when I was covering the inaugural of the DKR/JNB route (see my earlier post re: Africa launch) and was told that *cargo* yields, as much or more so than pax yields, will be the big thing with Accra.

Totally agree with you, we got 6000euros worth of cheese stuck in amsterdam from paris to Accra cause KLM lack of space on their daily MD11. those where booked 4 weeks in advance and noted as perishables so they get priority, we tried to switch them to Cargolux and no availability. Now cheese been sitting there for almost a week. Now claiming on the insurance/airline. the week before we had to send them from paris to amsterdam then to to dubai then Accra.
Cargo space is much needed to ACC. especially now from JFK with traders and excess baggage thats where the money is not paying passengers.

I'll try and get a couple of pics of the inaugural flight

Not knowing much on ACC what precautions do they have for the flight crews staying between flights? I am asking based on what I have read on this site and others.

Which flight are you talking about and are you looking at the seat maps? The seatmaps don't usually tell the whole story. The 166 going to ACC is pretty full in Y the next few days from what I can see; the 167 coming back is light initially though.

Tonight's inaugural bookings had 18 open J seats and was overbooked by 14 in Y. Looks like it's going out with 13 open J seats and 20+ open in Y.

If cargo is key, maybe UA could buy out DL, dump the 767 from that route and add a better cargo-carrying A330 to the route. stirthepot ...

Typical loads on the first flights. The flight is packed for the next few weeks in Y however... Give it a week or two. JNB flights are still just warming up.
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

I thought I was looking at the 166 for tonight, but now I'm not so sure--it seemed to be less than half full in both classes, but perhaps in my haste I typed in the wrong date or something. Apologies if I got it wrong, and glad for Delta's sake that the actual load was heavier!

As mentioned, Accra is a pretty safe city...one of the safest in West Africa, and probably one of the safest in all of Africa. Just don't do stuff you wouldn't do in New York, Paris, London, or Tokyo, and you will be just fine there usually.

Thats great for Delta. Will make connections to West Africa a lot easier. I bet some European carriers are feeling a bit edgy right now.
Just checked flightview.com, the flights on-route. Congrats Delta.

Usually flights start light anyhow. The word will get out, travel agents will sell more, and in time the flights will pick up, especially on a route like this, it should do fine.
There is something special about planes....

Amazing that it does this well considering that it is literally thousands of dollars more expensive in coach than North American and thousands of dollars more expensive each way in F than North American. Even given the difference in F products, the bottom line is that I could go F on North American for what DL wants for coach. Each in a 767-300ER.

Accra is arguably the safest major city in Africa, and the most modern outside of South Africa, and just as safe, if not safer, than most major US cities. Hence, it is no surprise Delta went for Accra. Combined that with a population base that is of above average wealth for the continent, and one that has a large ex-pat community in the the US, and it was a no brainer. Great to see Delta enter this market. I'm sure they will be very successful.

Delta is a much better known airline than North American is. Their products are also quite different. People just feel better traveling on an airline that is better known.

their turnaround time in Accra is very short considering the TONNES of caro to be loaded/offloaded in Accra. Flight left today with around 60min delay

Understand that Delta's 1st flight could not carry much cargo at all on the first flight. Even with the light passenger load they had to drop 12 tons of the 21 tons they had booked.

The passenger load will pick up. I noted that DL and NA were both flying non stop ACC-JFK head to head on Tuesday. I believe that NA actually carried more passengers but, I do not believe that will continue.

I would not count on cargo as a major source of revenue. In comparision the GIA flight to London normally takes around 26-28 tons of cargo a day from Accra to London.

Soups should have sent the cheese via London it would have made it on GIA or BA both of which are running around a 2-3 day back log only.

Part of the problem is that there isn't very much wiggle room on the JFK end due to timing of the connection feeds. The departure of 5:15pm from JFK can pretty much only be moved by 15 minutes to 5:00pm in order to accomodate as many legal domestic connections as possible. The return ACC-JFK arrival time of 4:15pm at JFK is also pretty much at the limit for many of the onward domestic connections.
