Automatic Overhead Lockers

Tue Dec 12, 2006 7:08 am

Dear all,

I am very curious as I heard from my colleages that the overhead lockers/compartments can be automatically closed by pressing a buttom on some 777s. I wonder if this is true or not. If it is, this would be very nice for both pax and cabin crew. I wonder if this is an option offered by Boeing. The O/H lockers on 777 are always heavy to close if they are fully loaded. And it is even more difficult to pull them down if they are empty. Pax tend to close them all after they get their baggage out leaving the weight exercise for the cabin crew as they conduct their after landing check.

Back to the question, just wonder if they can be automatically closed.

I have never heard of such a feature... The mechanism required would add dead weight/fuel cost for very little benefit.  dollarsign   dollarsign

I strongly agree with your statement.

And it would also add additional wiring, and that would add to both the construction and maintenance costs of the aircraft too.

"Since items in the overhead compartments may have shifted during our flight, we ask that you use caution when opening them."

There would be no way to stop items from falling.

The A380 has assisted overhead bin retraction, but I do not know if they can all be opened or closed remotely.

I think it would only work for closing the bins; if there is such a feature.

777 also has assisted overhead bin retraction. They are the dydraulics helping the bin to retract located on both sides of the bin. This is also the reason why pax tend to close all the bins after getting their bags out. Nonetheless, they are not automatic.
