Airbus Prepares To Deliver 3,000th A320 Family A/C

Wed Dec 13, 2006 8:58 pm

Airbus is preparing to deliver from Toulouse the 3,000th example of its A320 single-aisle aircraft family.

The example, currently F-WWBC (set to become 9M-AFP) has been painted in a special commemorative livery for customer Malaysia-based low fares airline Air Asia...

"Anyone with eyes to see..."! But he's got a point. The A320-100 doesn't have winglets and the A320-200 does. Who do Airbus think they're fooling calling them a single family?  sarcastic

But 3,000, eh?

And, of course, going by type and sub-type, the A320-200 is the most successful jet airliner of all time...  stirthepot

Is it really? Any idea how many have been sold and who takes the second place if the A320-200 takes the first?

Is that so indeed? Never knew that. Probably because it has been in production for such a long time, seeing its direct competitor the 737-400 to the door first and now not really having much trouble holding off the 737-800 either...

Well, the same article mentions that Boeing delivered 5000th 737 last Feb. There is nothing in common (maybe except the cockpit windows design) between the first 737-100 and the latest NGs but they are from the same family and no one disputes this. Airbus just chose to name their aircraft models in a different way - otherwise instead of A318/319/320/321 you could easily have A320 - 100, A320 - 200, A320 - 300 etc and eventually in 20 - 30 years the A320NG. Then of course no one would doubt that they were from the same family.

By the end of November Airbus had sold 2,628 A320s. If I'm absolutely honest, I've forgotten how many of those were A320-100s (someone will soon tell us) but it isn't more than ten or fifteen or so. Either way, the total is over 2,600. Nearest - I would guess - is the 737-800 with 1,956. Squeeze in 14 BBJ2s and that's 1,970.

Tediously, someone will immediately point out that the 737-800 has been on sale for much less time than the A320-200. Absolutely true but irrelevant.

Fascinating. Thank you so much. So, to repeat you, going by sub-type the A320-200 is the best selling aircraft ever!  duck

Only 21 320-100s were made - they were the very early ones that went to BA and AF and scrapping time has already come for some of them.

Twenty, plus the prototype.

Its for a LCC, nothing very surprising there...

And that in just eighteen years.

I think AF and BA are the only operators.

The actual sales period has been about 21 years I guess.

And BA will slowly phase them out next year. Nice one Airbus.

And if you caannot call the A318 and A321 the same family, then how can you call the 736 and 739 the same family?  Wink

This is quite an achievement Big grin

How long will the a320 sales continue for?
Can you say 'Beer Can' without sounding like a Jamaican saying 'Bacon'?

At least a decade, depends on the timing of the A320s replacement, for all we know it might not even be all new and could be called te A320 also! Theres nothing wrong with the A320s fuselage dimensions as far as I can see.

Airbus is preparing to deliver from Toulouse the 3,000th example of its A320 single-aisle aircraft family.

Nice round figure calling for celebrations.
However, the ac with MSN 3000 will only be the no. 2991 actually built.
4 A319s and 5 A321s were not built.
