Thu Dec 14, 2006 1:47 am

Spirit Airlines has filed application for services to Haiti on 12DEC06.

http://dms.dot.gov/search/document.c...m?documentid=432911&docketid=26607

The route will be Ft. Lauderdale - Port au Prince on board 144-seater A319, effective 01APR07.

Currently American is the only US carrier flying to Haiti.

based on the schedule, I'd say they are targeting the local traffic:

FLL-PAP 0800-0855
PAP-FLL 0955-1255

Effective 12/14/06 AA will serve MIA-PAP 3X daily (2 AB6, 1 757).

AF offers 4X weekly 320 service on the same route.

AA doesn't serve CAP (yet). I've heard AA has looked at it though...

They serve MIA-PAP 3x daily year-round with the exception of a small amount of time in the fall when they put more planes into maintence.

3x weekly, on the routing MIA-PAP-FDF-PTP-CAY. It takes the entire day for the plane to do the route, so it operates in alternate directions on opposite days, resting on Mondays.

Actually, they aren't. Ft. Lauderdale-based commuter airline Lynx Air offers scheduled service from both Fort Lauderdale and Miami to Cap Haitein.

It will be interesting to see what American Airlines does in response. American Airlines flies daily Fort Lauderdale-Port Au Prince service with a 737-800. The route is a very, very good performer for them.

If AA were not so plane constrained I would imagine we would see AA trying to beef up and/or mirror NK routes out of MIA.

Maybe the 737 will bump up to a 757.

How will the new NK fares compare to the current AA fares? Will they be doing that silly $9.00 fare?? This could be a killer fare war. Good news for PAP passengers who consistently pay top dollar for their tickets.

AA is plane constrained? They just sold a bunch of 757s and parked AB6s and M80s.

Spirit is not a lowfare airline, they are low cost. It is unlikely that you will find bargains on this route with them. Grand Cayman fares for example start at $298 typically.

Good news here, hopefully NK will be as popular there as they are here in the Bahamas.

Yep, based it loads alone it looks like it does great. One time I was checking ticket prices and it was 1400 dollars!

(btw AA807 was the flight where I saw someone bringing a fan onboard!)

AA also has service to PAP from JFK and previously BOS.

Cheers,

I'm surprised DL hasn't started JFK-PAP yet. Maybe we'll see that and/or ATL-PAP when the 73G's arrive.

I hope NK knows what they're getting into as far as PAP. With the excessive baggage and political instability. I notice they don't RON the plane there, didn't think they would

We won't see Delta do ATL PAP but down the line a daily flight from New York would not suprise me. Literally nearly all traffic from the US to Haiti goes to South Florida and New York. MIA PAP has the highest percentage of local traffic of any AA route from MIA. There are days when the morning flight goes out with zero connecting passengers.

Yeah it's my understanding that the crews don't even leave the plane for security reasons. They land and turn that bird right around...

Okay, something's wrong - eastbound in 55 minutes, but westbound is two hours and 55 minutes? In reverse, this would work, crossing a time zone and all, but something's not right here.

There really isn't much of any other kind, is there?

I hope this is successful for both Spirit and Haiti.

It is correct. There is a time zone difference. Port Au Prince is one hour earlier.

http://www.worldtimezone.com/time-caribbean12.php

According to this map, Port-Au-Prince and southern Florida are in the eastern time zone. The flight times should be roughly the same.

And as Haiti lies to the east of Florida, if it was in a different time zone, it would be an hour AHEAD, as the further east you go, the later the time gets. For Haiti to be an hour BEHIND, it would have to lie to the west of Florida, and that is the Gulf of Mexico.

There is definitely something wrong with the times.

According to AA's website, all four of their MIA-PAP flights are blocked at two hours and two hours, ten minutes on the return:

MIA-PAP AA 377 dp 6:30 AM ar 8:30 AM
PAP-MIA AA 816 dp 9:40 AM ar 11:15 AM

You are correct, they are in the same time zone. However, Haiti does not observe daylight savings time, hence why the schedules are correct.

Yeah that is why they are plane constrained. There are no jets to start new routes because so many have been parked and sold in the interest of fleet cominality and lowering costs.

To start a new route these days you have to cut one somewhere else.

I did not realize any A300s had been parked.

This is a logical statement.

However, I have checked AA's website for flights in January (Eastern Standard Time) and May (Eastern Daylight Time), and there are no differences in the scheduled time. In both January and May, flights times are identical.

Since I won't be travelling to Port-Au-Prince anytime soon, I can't say as this really affects me; however, either American or Spirit has something incorrect...I just can't figure out which one.

I can't figure it out either. If MIA and PAP are in the same time zone, then there is no way it is a 55 minute flight. I know PAP doesn't observe DST, so it should be a 9:55 arrival. I also don't get that AAs schedule doesn't change? I'm confused. I'll have to ask a Haitian I guess!

No, it doesn't. Spirit isn't a low fare airline. For example, on the Grand Cayman route, outside of promo fares, $149 each way is the norm. Spirit has the benefit of being percieved as a low fare airline when they are anything but.

From what I've read,Hatians bring everything, including the kitchen sink with them,as the island has nothing, not even wood. They already chopped it down and burned it. I bet NK has to turn away cargo in that little A319.
