"Tell El Al Campaign", Pax @ MAN Want LY Back

Thu Dec 14, 2006 6:12 pm

LY ceased operation to MAN in 2001 after operating this route from 1985 twice a week as LY311/2.

The Jewish community have decided that things are needed to be done in order to bring the airline back to MAN.

Here is a link to the site with all the info http://www.tellelal.co.uk/index.php

These people have a point. I expect this to happen in the near future.

Anyway, rumors (well it's not exactly a rumor to me as i've heard it from an executive of LY) that LY is going back to CPH too.

Wow!! I am impressed. I'm glad that the people are supporting an airline to start a route for them.

Does this happen often?

Not long ago I had an enquiry from what I think was a travel agent to lay on connecting charter flights between MAN and STN to link up with a weekly El Al service which operates there (I don't know what the attraction of Stansted is but there you go). The STN flights were late at night and to lay on any kind of connection was impractical and very expensive, so it didn't happen.

I thought Arkia were considering coming to MAN at some point?

It's bizarre that MAN no longer has direct flights to TLV. Manchester and neighbouring Liverpool and Leeds have a larger Jewish community than the whole of Italy, and the Netherlands.

Before telling El Al return to MAN, they better tell themselves to buy a full fare ticket so that the airline will believe it is sustainable to run a TLV-MAN flight.

If LY returns to MAN, I think they will use a 738 or a 73G

El Al was flying to Manchester for well over 20 years. Tourism is down due to the political situation. However it is not a Charity. It is a business. Maybe they should do a deal with Arkia and Israir to operate charter flights.

I thought that El Al was concentrating on intercontinental (long haul) routes that attract both tourist and business passengers. MAN does not seem to fit this profile. Yet to be fair, El Al continues to fly to MRS, which seems similar to MAN. Both destinations primarily would generate low yield VFR traffic for LY.

By the way, LY wants to increase frequencies to MRS from March 2007 due to the success of the route

I don't know whether the MAN route was profitable....Quite often throughout the 1980s and 1990s the flights to and from MAN were not direct, but had a stopover here in GVA. I remember very well the LY 311 and 312 flight numbers, which were sometimes appearing instead of the regular GVA 345/346 numbers. Usually these TLV-GVA-MAN-GVA-TLV flights were operated by 757s. It happened regularly.

BTW...those who designed the "Tell El Al" campaign are using LY's old logo...the one created in 1962 by a great Dutch graphic designer and which was later transformed into the linear logo used until last year...before the stupid and ridiculous decision to "modernize" it into the horror one can admire at www.elal.com...
I bitterly miss the livery that should never have been changed (repetition...)
