Is it me or does that video seem as if it were being played back a little fast?

The oscillations look fast ... especially the rudder swinging back and fourth like it is. Rudders can't take rapid back and fourth movements like that ... they break off. Additionally, the aircraft looks like it has a really high ground speed.

Anyone else think the video has been sped up for the drama?

come to Perth in summer time and you'll see some crazy shit like that...cross wind gusts up to 60kts and windshear alerts that are quite incredible. usually due to the hot easterly winds.

I was in an aborted United 757 landing just like that in Portland a number of years ago. We hit the ground very fast, bounced, and as the left wing went down, the pilot gunned the engines and we lifted up again. After a few minutes the pilot explained what had happened and he even sounded a bit shaken. When we came in for a second attempt, it was very nerve wracking. The pilot brought the plane in very fast the second time.

After a landing like that, does the pilot have to make any notations or contact maintenaince? Could that be considered a hard landing?

we don't generally get this caliber of wind in Puget Sound area.... highest recorded wind at SEA last night (69 mph), 90 mph on the coast.... 3 major bridges closed, 1 M + peeps without power, 3 dead, extreme urban flooding (if you watched the football game, you would have seen the rivers of rain running down the stadium steps [and darn seahawks lose...   ]).

at the airport, Terminal C closed due to broken windows.... South satellite and Terminal A (I believe) are currently without power.....

for us, that's newsworthy.....

EDIT: terminal C is now open - still no power to A and South Satellite

I don't doubt the crab angle. I do question the light reflecting from the top of the fuselage. It doesn't seem to fit the light conditions overall. The whole aircraft, in fact, has a cut-out look to it. However, after a second and closer look, the reflections of the landing lights in the puddles on the runway and taxiway lead me to believe it's probably real.

Neither do I. I'm just saying having it zoomed in like that it makes the runway appear nearly perpendicular to the plane when in fact it's not. I would guess that plane's at about a 45 degree angle to the runway.

Yeah - I flew in last night (Thursday) with the high winds on HA22 from HNL. It was uneventful until the last few minutes when we were really rocking back and forth. The pilots were really pulling back on the engines then increasing the throttle. We pretty much slammed onto the ground at about 21:40 local time. It was quite an interesting landing, and apparently we were lucky to get in on time (early, actually!).
That's why we're here.

The worst landing I was in was on a King Air 200 landing in a snow storm with high winds at LXV.... This is the only time after thousands of hours in the air that I ever thought I was going to be sick.......  vomit

How bad is DEN with high wind landings... I don't think that I've seen or heard of too many incidents here in DEN.

That's pretty extreme. Perhaps there's a Tech/Ops type around here who can tell us the maximum landing crab angle for a 767 and other types.

You're correct that the foreshortening effect of the telephoto lens makes the angle appear more extreme than it is.

Yeah I would be very surprised if the plane actually touched down at that angle (if that's as much as it looks). My guess is they were correcting to get over the centerline before coming back with left rudder before touchdown. Maybe we could get an expert on here.

Dash 8's can take an amazing beating. The things aren't easy to make a smooth landing in to begin with. Usually some crosswind makes for a better landing with it.

I've smacked on Dashes hard enough to open overheads more than once.

There is no max crab angle for any aircraft I'm aware of. Transport category aircraft have max crosswind limitations. You shouldn't "run out" of aileron or rudder if the crosswind is less than the limitation. For the Dash 8, it's 36 knots. I've had 35 knots worth of crosswind, but it was not a gusty day. Makes for some interesting landings even without the gusts.

I landed at SAC in the early 80s during a winter Pacific storm. After a very rocky approach as I wondered if we were going to do a go around, we hit, bounced into the air and were probably airborne a second time 300 meters. From what I understand, that is dangerous as the aircraft is no longer flying.

The FA announced-"Ladies and gentlemen, we've just landed twice at Sacramento, welcome to California". It got a good laugh.

The best "worst" landing was at RAF Mildenhall in the winter in a Q model, the runway was iced over, we skidded a third of the runway on the left main as I watched through the flight deck the view change from the hangars on the starboard, to the 130's parked on the port. The pilot (ANG, wearing a yacht skippers cap and sporting a beard!) finally got it pointed straight and slammed on the breaks on the only pavement that was ice free.

Nice to be young and dumb and think, "wow, that was really cool".

I remember once only 737's were allowed to land at Wellington because it was so windy and on approach heaps of bags fell out of the over head lockers. When we landed the FA said "we have now hit the ground at WLG, if your hand luggage survived the landing it will have shifted during flight. "
