Sat Dec 16, 2006 9:35 am

This just on, Continental flight 1065 a Boeing 737-800 from IAH-PDX just diverted to COS with a possible fire on board. This is all the details I have right now.

I hope it is not a fire, the odds of surviving an inflight fire are usually slim to none. We dont need a catastrophe in the US airline system now that it is recovering and worst of all this time a year it would be really sad to have a major accident.

They've been on the ground for over an hour... and no news coverage. Sounds like a pretty normal diversion. Smoke alarms go off all the time. 99% of the time it's a false indication.

Well, in-flight fire could mean anything from a grandma lighting up a cigarette in the lav to Valujet 592...

I'm sure we'll know more very soon

Well with the information that he/she has given us, we have no idea how serious it really is, lets wait and see before making assumptions.

At least its is on the ground so I can relax. I just really hate inflight fires, airplanes and fire are not a good combo.

Even if there was a fire onboard the aircraft it doesn't always mean that people have a "slim to none" chance of surviving. I work with a flight attendant who had an inflight fire and everyone made it off her airplane alive.
Prepare doors for departure and cross-check.

Ouch possible fire on board and you have to divert to COS with the wind that we had here in Colorado today... That had to be a fun landing...

I pray all is well

IS this the flight where someone's personal air cleaner caught fire?. It seems from a news report that I read read that the person carried a personal air cleaner on board and had it working during flight. It caught fire and badly damaged 2 seats. It seems as thought the person was badly burnt. Read that this morning

This is the one. I never understood the personal air device. Looks more like a marketers dream. It is worn around the neck, no where near the nostrils or mouth. How do you breath in 'purified' air when the device is have way down your torso?

Hope who all was involved recovers swiftly. I forsee impending lawsuits to the company that makes these devices.

I will wait until Monday morning and check the FAA sight. They will have something on this in their incident reports.

However, if 2 seat where burned badly, I can't see them sending this aircraft back in the air..

Why not? It only takes minutes to take off the row of seats and replace with a fresh set. Or to take off seats and replace at a more convenient location. Or to block off use of these seats until a more convenient location for replacement.

In no case does this make the aircraft unairworthy short of some other circumstances. Since they took off not too long afterwards after fetching a fresh crew, seems more like a non-issue.

A flight attendant arrived and used a halon fire extinguisher to douse the area. The shirt worn by the passenger with the personal air purifier had a hold burnt though it. Further examination revealed a reddened area on his chest.

Looks like someone needs a spelling lesson.
