How Many Of Us Are ATC?

Sun Dec 17, 2006 1:03 am

Just wanted to see how many of the a.net fans are air traffic controllers...
If you are- where are you stationed?

we can start by couting me in...
I'm the commander of an Israeli Air-Force base tower in the center of Israel.

I'm not ATC but I am a retired pilot. I just want to say one thing to this forum; and, I'm not brown nosing. The VAST number of controllers (any position/post) are hard working, dedicated, well trained individuals that have a VERY tough job. There is a lot of stress related work, difficult hours, etc., and it takes it's toll on them. We could not exist on our day to day job if they were not there!. Almost without exception, I found them to be helpful whenever they could. A lot of times we pilots could not see their "big picture" and we had to understand that they have their rules to follow and we would have to accept that. Grace Under Pressure would describe what most approach controllers are at the major airports. Once again, you do a terrific job. Thanks for helping all of us fly saftely.

If there's anybody here from Fargo tower or Fargo tracon, can you tell me why you guys seem to generally dislike anyone using the Sioux callsign?

Not that I'm complaining about ATC in general, I just don't like hearing attitude over the radio whenever I'm down there.

I worked as a controller while in the U.S. Air Force, but have been out of the game for over 30 years. I would like to get back into it but the FAA doesn't like to hire people that are older than dirt...  Yeah sure

I'm not sure, but I'm curious to know as well. Coincidentally, I just met a recent UND grad today who is joining the Fargo tower position after this summer.

i love ATC people, because they have the power to make pilots look dumb lol

do you know how many pilots ive flown with who think they know "better" about vectoring a/c down the loc, and who think they are masters of air traffic, constantly bitching about how the controller made this mistake made that mistake etc, it's so easy to sit there in one airplane and mock the guy who makes all the planes go....

so thanks guys, i wish more controllers would make funny comments now and then  Smile

Id love to be in ATC, but I cant do that due to disability, but I have been trying to get into ATSS/ET openings, I am a bit tired of the FAA's behavior regarding the ATSS/ET selection. From what it looks like, I am always at the bottom of the application pile since I am not a Veteran and can never have Military service due to my disability. But I get an average of 20 inquiries each month from the FAA for this position and I keep signing them and sending them back out with "still interested" but I have never gotten to the next step. I wonder if some ATC applicants experience this with the FAA too? I am sure they get the inquiries when short-listed asking if they are still interested or not in the opening, but never get to the next step. I assume the next step would be an actual interview. I get repeat openings over and over all this year. I really wish the FAA would atleast consider me and short-list me past the "letter of inquiry step" I feel like I am getting BULK and JUNK mail at my house from Oklahoma City.

Nice! I was actually in that group. Came in on a saturday and sat down with some controllers, listened in over the frequency while they explained to us all the tools you guys have to work with. Pretty cool I gotta say. I'm up there majoring in Commercial Aviation but it was cool to see what kind of stuff you guys have to work with to keep us from trading parts with our compeditors at FL350.

I'm ATC at Lebanon Muni KLEB. Spent 5 years in the Navy down in New Orleans, now working contract, and will probibly stay contract since I can't afford a 20k pay cut to join the FAA.

Hahhaaaa! The sad thing is she came to FAT with no intention of ever checking out. She filled a seat at Fresno that a deserving, fired AFSS specialist like me, could have had. In over a year she qualified on one radar position. But she sure let us know how it was done in Seattle.... Wink

Anyway, thanks to all the folks for the kind words regarding ATC, I really do feel bad for the new hires in the FAA. What a sh*tty way to treat people that want to do one of the more difficult jobs out there. I am also feeling the effects of this new pay scale to the tune of about $15-20K a year. I came over to AT from the Flight Service contracting and haven't seen a pay raise yet.

Gotta love it.... Smile

J.mo, and the rest,

Me being a pilot, I appreciate the job you do especially the tiresome shifts you have to work. I fly 4 mornings out of the week at FAT doing air temps and have been helped out a lot when cruising around in the fog. Many thanks.

I'll take either one. Not too picky either way. Although I would like to start in Terminal. Certainly won't turn down a center job though.

They've undoubtably had a number of negative experiences with UND pilots in the past, and so are fearing the worst whenver they hear another one coming. I know ATC around DAB is the same with ERAU, and I'd imagine it would be similar anywhere with a big flight school due to the number of new pilots.

However, if you show that you're competent, I find that they loosen up pretty quickly.
