Delta Airlines Lockheed L100 Hercules

If just found out that Delta has operated 3 Lockheed L100 Hercules and would like to know more about it since this a rather unusual aircraft for an airline like Delta.
What did Delta use them for and what kind of routes did they operate ?

Alaska had them too, as did Wein and Mark Air . . . Lynden Air Freight uses them up here now.

According to Delta.com, they were used for general cargo . . . .

DL ordered indeed three Hercules to replace its fleet of Curtiss C-46 freighter. The three were delivered to DL between August and October 1966, and were sold between October 1973 and March 1974, but their commercial services ended on September 1st, 1973 as the airline was having enough underfloor cargo space in its wide-body fleet.

Five other aircraft were leased on short-term, of which four were used when DL sent back its own aircraft to the manufacturer to get them the fuselage stretched. Among those four leased airframe, two are unidentified.

Civilian or Military ?

N9268R was sold to Saturn Airways.

N9258R was sold to Air Finance, but after checking the photos on A.net, it appears that this aircraft was used by Pacific Western as C-FPWK 11/1973-01/1981, before going to Northwest Territorial Airways 06/1981-04/1982 when it was destroyed by fire following a ground accident on April 11th.

N9259R was sold to Air Finance, but it went to Alaska International Air where it became N105AK.

It took a bit of getting used to after watching the old "D"-46's rumble in and out.

Before too long the sight of a couple L-100's parked over at the old air cargo building on the east side of the airport parking lot became commonplace.

There was pretty good spotting from the east side of Concourse F and once the rotunda's were built it was fun to watch the L-100's taxy past those large windows.

The L100 (L-382) was a great plane to fly. It was noisy, not too fast and we were stuck in the mid-altitude range. The three of them were flown mostly out of ATL to the Northeast and to the Southwest. (ATL-NYC and ATL to SFO by way of MSY, DAL (Love Field) and LAX. Also they were used to ferry engines and crews to out stations for maintenance on grounded passenger aircraft. Some of the more junior pilots were dual qualified on both the DC-9 and the Hercules.

They were quite a step-up from the old C-46 freighters. Those were low and slow. No pressurization. No radar. And they leaked. We were stuck usually at 6 to 8 thousand feet enroute trying to dodge the showers and T-storms and when we finally got to our destination we had to dry off. Again, some of the more junior crews had to be dual qualified with the CV-440. All in all, we still had a good time.....lots of fun.

Have not found anything. I usually try the search before starting a new thread. I also checked wikipedia before but have not found anything. If it is only about once a year it is okay don´t you think. We have other topics that comes up every few weeks.  Wink

I would appreaciate that return posters exercise some common sense and not attack someone for not researching the files and archives. It seems to me that this has become pretty common lately from some. Columba said he had researched, but couldn't find anything.

If we all found everything that we wanted in the archives, there would be no need for anyone to post anything interesting. Call me stupid, but I didn' know, either, that Delta flew C-130s.

I found this a very interesting topic, as I didn't know at all the DL ever flew the Hercules. Without Columbas topic I wouldn't know yet. Well done Columba!

By the way I am rather tired about those "my Boeing is better than your Airbus, but my 380 is lager than your 747"....stuff as well. I am normally not even starting to read those.

I have no idea where DL flew the L100's, but knowing what I know about the L100, they can fly almost literally anywhere. It's a very tough little plane--that's probably why First Air is still using the L100 for cargo flights around northern Canada.
Don't hatchet your counts before they chicken.

Sure I do... all I was trying to say was that this topic has been discussed before, and you could have gotten some of your questions answered by looking up an old thread... Nevertheless, I also understand that sometimes its a lot faster to start a new thread than look up an old one... Wasn't trying to attack your topic... just making a suggestion for next time....

You seemed to be policing with your first post. By telling him that there may have been a previous thread you were implying that he did not check when he did. Those who live in glass houses!!

Actually 160, it wasn't the MAIN reason that Delta bought them. Delta was operating old WWII C-46's for cargo purposes and they needed the Hercs to provide better and more reliable service than the '46s. We actually hauled outsized cargo such as racing horses and automobiles and trucks that could not have been carried on Delta otherwise. The three L100s were not delivered to Delta until the latter part of 1966, well after the introduction of the CV-880's and the DC-8's. If they wanted them just for hauling engines around the system then one would have sufficed. The Pratts on the 8 and the GEs on the 880 were pretty good engines, even in their teething days with the new jets. Both engines were based on seasoned military versions.

If anyone is interested Gemini Jets and Corgi both make excellent models of a Delta L100 in 1:400 scale and 1:144 scale respectfully....
