Minimum Connecting Time Dom To Int At SYD

Mon Dec 18, 2006 8:20 am

in light of all the mis-connects at SYD in last few weeks, (whether due to industrial action on the sly, eg. go slow or whatever), shouldn't the official minimum connection times be adjusted accordingly? eg. 90 minutes QF dom to UA int, will not work anymore in a lot of cases, but you can still book this.

It should be increased to 150 minutes minimum, to avoid mis-connects. (a really good reason to avoid connections at all, especially at awful SYD)

I have done it in 80 minutes before, and I think the minimum connecting time is 75 minutes, however usually I prefer to connect anywhere with more time time that the minimum. For Sydney though I would usually say 90 minutes minimum and but always have a later back up flight is possible in case of delays

90 mins is fine so long as your flight isn't delayed getting in and there isn't other disruptions going on. Having said that, I am still waiting for my bag to turn up somewhere between MEL-SYD  worried

People are missing their connections much more so than usual & articles in Brisbane papers over last week, warning pax, that mamangement & unions are in disagreement.

IT'S A HAPPENING WHETHER IT'S OFFICIAL UNION POLICY OR NOT !!!

I think the best option is to avoid SYD for transfers at all costs..

The transfer is a pain, and from BNE, MEL or elsewhere, you need to allow a minimum of 120 minutes. Add the 90 minute flight to get there, plus the ground time at the other end, and that's an extra 4-5 hours on the journey time.

No wonder SQ and EK etc have been some successful in MEL and elsewhere.

There is no industrial action going on at SYD that I've heard of.

My company is in the freight industry and as soon as there is the slightest sniff of delays, especially due to industrial action, we get warned straight away. We are getting our freight in the times frames that we expect from all terminals.

With the possible sale of QF in the future, there may well be the chance of industrial action, but I can assure you, it will not be confined just to SYD if it happens.

As for transfer times, if it is from one of the domestic terminals to the International, you would want at least 90 mins, remembering that the airlines provide shuttle bus connections themselves, the transfer should be fairly painless. International to domestic, best to have 120 mins, while the customs process at SYD is usually pretty good (my last trip I was through everything and at the train station 20 mins after arrival) I would allow 60 mins for that, then the transfer time to the domestic terminals.

Mrs. 777fan and I were able to do it in about 90 minutes (that was last month). We were flying AKL-SYD on NZ; we were able to deplane, collect our bags and process customs (despite a snafu that involved my visa having the wrong birthdate on it!) in about 45 minutes. We then attempted to use the DJ transfer domestic transfer desk just outside of customs only to find it closed for no apparent reason. Undaunted, we flagged a cab and for about $9 (AUS), made it over to domestic where we checked in and were at our gate in about 25 minutes.

Bottom line: I would build in about 2-2.5 hours just to be safe.

the big problem is heading outbound. If fail to make int connection, then having to go standby, later that day or next day is not a very pleasant option at this time of year with flights being full !!!

Agree, but I also think beware if you arrive SYD 06.00- 11.00, and try to make an international to domestic connections.

This is PEAK hour at SYD for arrivals, and if u miss ur connection, u may also have to sit around.

Happened to me last year.. arrived on Asiana ICN-SYD in the morning, took over 120 minutes to get through customs, then had delay getting across to domestic terminal. So although the whole flight was a Qantas ticketed flight, had to sit around at SYD until noon for a seat to MEL.

That's why I only fly CX now!

With Sepo's in control of QF soon, fewer Australian's will want to fly the AUSTRALIAN AIRLINE & guess this will lead to less SYD-centric philosophy at new QF, as pax refuse to be shoved via SYD to get anywhere & vote with their feet & fly other carriers on nonstop or more direct services.
