Air India Giving India A Bad Name

Tue Dec 19, 2006 12:23 am

According to the article below..

Air Inida needs to improve alot (I agree).

"The airline (Air India) was presented the prestigious award at the glittering 17th annual travel awards ceremony by TTG Asia Media in Pattaya," the article proudly proclaimed, without explaining what TTG stands for.

They also mention a merger of Air India, but does not say with who..anyone knows?

They are merging with the other govt. controlled airline-Indian (IC).

I would fly AI if it offered service from IAD.
come fly with me

TTG (Travel Trade Gazette) Asia is the leading travel trade magazine in the Asian region and is pretty well reputed. It has a circulation of nearly 17,000 copies among industry professionals in the region.

I agree with the author of the article, privatization is not enough; a wholesale change in corporate culture is needed.

For that to happen the airline will have to be privatised. I don't see that happening in too much of a hurry at the moment. SO AI-IC will still have to blunder on with government bureaucrats running the show.

Sadly not too much happens in a hurry in India.

However, when the merger & privatization is done and the new Air India is unencumbered by the GoI it will again take it's place among the premier carriers of the world. The first steps toward that goal will be the induction of the brand new 777s.

That may be true for anything which depends on a government decision or initiative...but I wouldn't make a blanket statement like that about India....the Indian private sector is one of the most competitive in todays world..... smile

I was indeed referring to the speed at which the GoI operates.  Wink

I agree with the general premise of this article that Air India doesn't reflect how things are happening in India. I love my country... I just wish I could share that sentiment with our national carrier. I refuse to fly AI even if they're the cheapest. Besides the food, everything else is a turn-off.

Hopefully competition with other upstart Indian carriers will spur that type of change. The danger, of course, is that change will result in some "creative destruction" that the government may try to "protect" AI/IC from, causing more problems. What really needs changing is the disastrous airport infrastructure.

Well either AI-IC will adjust to the new competition or they will soon fade out.

They are taking some steps to address that especially with privatisation and expansion of the existing major airports and building new ones in BOM, DEL, BLR, HYD etc. Most of these are expected to come on stream in 07-09.
