Ex-UA 767's To Be Used To Start Gabon Airlines

Tue Dec 19, 2006 9:48 am

After the suspension of flights by Air Gabon in the spring, it appears that the new national airline of Gabon - Gabon Airlines - is ready to take off early next year with two ex-United 767's. The carrier is planning to acquire a third. These must be 767-200ER's?

Quote:
The company added that the maiden flight would be made within the first two weeks of January, flying from Libreville to Paris and back. This will be followed by other flights to other destinations in South Africa and other central African capitals.

Good to see those shortbus 762's back in the air....guess their desert neighbor DL L-1011's didn't cut it?

I hope they have a LOT of money. Those aircraft need a lot of work. Almost all of them were out of time and needed D checks.

That said, I've flown a lot of miles on those birds...when UA had them, they may have been old...but they were good!

Yeah,UA's 762's were some of the first ones made in the early 80's. One of the reasons they were retired was the dwindling availability of PW JT9 parts and the new rules for RVSM.
Saw one in VCV in July and it looked rough.....

One of the ex-UA 762s rotated thru KIX earlier this month.
Everybody was damn near shocked.
Widebody market must be really in short supply to have one of these birds taken out of the desert.

I always hear about these new African airlines that will start up, like a new Zambia Airways sometime ago of which nothing was heard again, and many others.

Interesting nonetheless, I hope this gets off the ground. But I doubt they'd be flying to Paris as soon as next month with their own metal.

I thought Royal Air Maroc was involved in setting this new carrier up? Now it seems just Gabonese investors and the president's sun as chairman. Does this mean another failed privatization in Central Africa (after Cameroon Airlines)?

To answer my own question: It seems Royal Air Maroc pulled out of the project or they were dumped by the Government of Gabon. Thus the end of the original plan for "Air Gabon International".

Ethiopian Airways will do the maintenance of the aircraft and give crew trainings. Two B767 are expected shortly and a third one will come later. Some more info (in french):

Agreed. Great to see the 762's flying again. Some of DL's L-1011s did make it back into service, but I think the ones left out there are goners.
Good goes around!

For Gabon to have to be as desperate to get two of those old UA 762, things are worse then in Cuba. If the government had any pride they would lease an airplane like Ghana Airlines does for London-Gatwick.

= As an FYI: Gabon is a relatively stable and wealthy African country. Per capita GDP is around USD 8,000 (PPP).

Forget maintenance....they're going to need a lot of money if Gabon is running the airline. I had some hope when RAM was behind the project but I think it's going to be the same ol' story as any number of restarted African carriers.

But the majority of the population lives below the poverty line. The wealth from oil resources is solely owned by a few. Nevertheless, beautiful country though.

Yes, the original plan for "Air Gabon International" has ended and Royal air Maroc has been pulled out by the gabonese government after 1 year of work . It's a total shame!
