Airbus To Assemble A/C In USA? OK Not Really...

Wed Dec 20, 2006 12:36 am

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/...ness/EU_POL_France_Strong_Euro.php

Interesting article in light of all the discussions on Anet about the slide in the dollar making Boeing A/C more affordable. Interesting comment in the article the Interior Minister of France commented that if the rise of the Euro continues, airbus will need to manufacture A/C in the USA.  confused  . Not really going to happen obviously. Comments like this indicate to me that there is real concern about Euro overvaluation affecting sales of A/C. Anyway curious if people think that currency valuation will significantly affect Airbus sales or is this a red herring? Anyway food for thought, Ciao

Airbus, with a US partner, has proposed building a tanker-version of the A330 in Alabama if it wins the USAF contract.

I guess, with a few mods, they could run civilian A330s down that line, too.

It would be a smart move on airbus' part to actually base a few plants outside the EU. How about something in Los Angeles... there should be plenty of douglas workers around that area with the needed skills... or something near the gulfstream factory or cessna plants?

That and maybe something near tupolev. Car manufacturers help smooth out their currency risks this way, and it helps with local political barriers too. Of course, I'm sure that there would be significant opposition, but they'd be a lot of opposition from certain groups in Seattle if Boeing said it was gonna start making 737s in Auckland or Kuala Lumpur too.

Are you referring to the one that builds military transports? That facility just got a new lease on life yesterday when the USAF ordered 10 more C-17s.

I am suggesting the commercial complex across the street that sits empty waiting to be turned into an industrial park.

Am I the only one that find the fact the french interior minister comments on Airbus odd?

That speaks volumes about just how strongly the government is tied to them.

As for the value of the EU it's not hurting Airbus sales, but rather Airbus profits. Their list price hasn't changed. It may be impacting their ability to discount, but that raises a host of other issues.
I don't care what you think of my opinion. It's my opinion, so have a nice day :)

IIRC, since China is in the "dollar zone" (their currency is somewhat tied to the US dollar) Airbus will get some insulation from Euro fluctucation by having the A320 plant there.

I believe the tankers they propose building will be built in Toulouse and flown to the US for tanker modifications. There won't be a full line in the US.

Airbus can propose all they want.. but before the US government allows a foreign entity to manufacture these birds, they will personally resurrect McDowell Douglas or re-institute Lockheed to build government aircraft..

But that's just my opinion so comme-ci comme-ca!

Everything I have read said the frames will be assembled in Alabama. However the fuselage and wing sections may be produced in EU Airbus plants and then flown to AL for final assembly (ala the 787) and modification to tanker/freighter specifications.

Wouldn't be the first time I was wrong and won't be the last.  Smile Wonder how many jobs a final assembly plant like that would create for AL...

Yes, IIRC they are getting 4. Canada may firm up another order for 4 as well next year, and there was talk of NATO getting some.
