SAA To Place Wide-body Order?

Wed Dec 20, 2006 9:52 pm

From Airline Business:

Quote:
Day flights will help SAA grow its network and add frequencies without having to add aircraft. But Ngqula says it also needs more widebodies to fully meet its growth ambitions. In a few months it will take back the three A340s subleased to Jet Airways and plans to add nine widebodies by 2008.

I´m not fully current on SAA´s backlog, but I understand that they don´t have any current orders placed. That would mean that we are looking at a minimum of 6 additional widebodies for 2008 (nine minus 3 A340-300s coming from 9W), possibly 9. Anyone willing to place bets? I go for A330-200s and additional A340-600s.

They tried to secure more new A340 series aircraft from Airbus earlier this year, but the production schedules dont allow it in the timeframe SAA want. Expect secondhand A340s to be sourced and added instead.

SAA needs to worry about reducing it's red line before splurging on more aircraft...

But then again, money grows on trees for South African parastatals... For the moment they are now subsidising Mango... never ends with them...

In IT, SAA is behind other Star carriers. While SAA has completed a painful transition to the Apollo reservations system, it still takes SAA staff several minutes longer than most of their Star counterparts to check in the average passenger..

Maybe SAA staff should try using the Amadeus system, It's actually the reservations-and inventory system they migrated to...  Wink

One option under study is day flights to Europe.

IMHO this will not work - customer demand will show the way.

4x of the planes are about 8 years old, while the remaining 2 are respectively 13 and 14 years old. IMMHO they still have quite a few years of active service in them.

SAA should think beyond the A340-600, a fine plane in 2000. 787 & 777 would do wonders for SAA fleet for the next 20 years.

The A340-600s have barely been delivered... They have another 15 years of life ahead with SAA at minimum. Besides - a combined A330/340/350 fleet could do wonders for SAA for the next 20 years.

According to some articles in Afrikaans daily newspapers, apparently SAA is talking to Boeing and Airbus about possible 787's and 350's.

SAA's first 744 was delivered in January 1991.

I agree with SA7700, no matter what the economics for the airlines, daylight flights between SA and Europe are just not popular. I did it once and never again.

Well they looked at 777s many years ago, why not now? My wife's boss has a 787 model in SAA colours on his desk  Smile
