Looks like United has cancelled all flights in to Denver today. They're allowing the few planes there now to depart. Must be ugly. What are other airlines doing?

I just heard they are planning on closing down operations at DIA, period.

I am currently right next to Centennial Airport...and it is bad...the visibility has gone way down with in the last 1/2 hour, down to less than 1/4 mile and will worsen. Blizzard conditions are expected to continue (lots of 40+mph winds)throughout the rest of the day and they are now saying we will accumulate up to 22-inches of snow.

Frontier, CO and Jetblue have a few more inbound with the last I can see per Flight Explorer is JetBlue 123 from New York...seen a few diversions including a 777 to OMA...AA to SLC...and such. Definite blizzard conditions at the airport....

It's not too bad on the west side of the Springs now, however I just came back from work in Teller County, and we had about a foot on the ground already by 10:00am. Hard to tell for sure, since the snow was going mostly sideways. I'm sure COS is getting hit hard, an employeee on the east side of town was reporting a whiteout with 8 inches down already.

DEN A2287/06 (12/211) - RUNWAY COVERED BY DRY SNOW TO A DEPTH OF 07/25 8 IN LOOSE SN 20 DEC 17:10 UNTIL UFN

I presume that's an un-plowed runway, since its use would involve about a 35 knot crosswind given DEN's current winds...

Ugly day...

I believe that was tested in March of 2003 plenty fine, but this will sure strain it too.

Fort Collins (~70mi. north) was no snow at around 8 AM and now has about 2-6 inches (dunes vary depth).
It looks bad here.

Safest/Best thing with the heavy snow an gusting winds is simply call it a day, and try again tommorow.

It's winter, it's the Rocky Mountains, it's the very high Great Plains...

Sometimes humanity has to stop and admire the handiwork of Mother Nature. We can plan for a lot of things, but she has the final say.

Off hand, I think DEN, ORD, and MSP probably have the best large-scale operations for dealing with winters (here in the U.S.), meaning that they are used to these kinds of snow storms. In a few days, things will be back to normal.

DIA is so big it seems to make it's own weather. I have often flown through raging snowstorms and as soon as we cross the outer marker, it's clear. Also departed in clear skies and as soon as we climb over the fence, we're in blinding snow.

I can, however, recall one bad blizzard that I was lucky just to miss and be able to get to DIA and catch, literally, "the last flight to SEA for the day". Fortunately it was a 777 so they were able to pack it to the gills and get a bunch of folks out.

My Lifeguard flights are also grounded... I live to the west of DIA and north of Denver and I have over a foot of snow with very high winds.... the bad news is this storm is only going to get worse before the possible stop around 1400MST tomarrow.

I'm about 30 miles south of KDEN, the weather front moving in today made for excellent spotting conditions yesterday evening, woke up today to a blizzard outside the house (looking forward to clearing a foot off the driveway).

You won't make it. The airport is already talking about canceling all flights tommorow as well, and city of Denver is issuing a "all employees go home" order.

Snow is falling here at a rate of 2inches a hour, and that's expected to continue for 24 hours since 10 this morning O.o

I don't think very many. When they decided to cancel all inbound flights, they were allowing those on the ground to depart. I drove by SAN today and saw two UA 737s and one Frontier 319 parked remotely. They probably didn't want their aircraft buried in snow drifts. I'd love to be in a UA or Frontier operations room to watch how they handle getting their schedules back on track. And with the XMAS weekend coming, I doubt they have many empty seats over the next few days to move passengers who can't fly today or tomorrow.

Southwest plans on operating a flight at 835 pm tonight. They still have it schedule. Also, many people here whom I've talked to aren't rebooked again until Saturday and Sunday on Frontier and United. United handled it really well. There were long lines, but the agents were suprisingly very kind and helpful. They were doing anything they could to assist people. Frontier seemed to be handling it well also, except their line streched out around the restaurants on the other side of the ticket counters, with an average waiting time earlier of three hours.

Snow fences are basically structures to keep the snow from blowing onto the road going into Denver Airport. This normally works to keep the wind from picking up snow and throwing it out on the road. Unfortunitly there is so much snow in the wind, it isn't making a difference.

The airport is closed, because Pena blvd (the main access route to the airport) is impassable at the moment (which is not unusual). UA, F9 and WN have all canceled their flights for today, and tomorrow morning.

It also sounds like the airport itself is closed due to whiteout conditions on the field. It's possible for Pena to be closed, but for the airport itself to remain open to air traffic... I remember that happening in past storms.

DEN and Pena Blvd is closed until further notice, probabily noon tomorrow. They were advising people to not even try to go to the airport by 6:00 a.m. There are reports that passengers were kept on AA 1860 (DEN-MIA leaving at 0730 MST) were kept on the plane for over 8 hours. They got to the deicing area, but one of the trucks got stuck in the snow. Then, they were 100 yards from the gate, but got stuck there. They finally got snowplows to clear out the rest of the gate area before they finally let them off. One (slightly upset) passenger said that AA said they were basically on their own. More information is at http://www.9news.com/acm_news.aspx?O...76dce6-ac1f-02d8-0047-c589c01ca7bf .

Wow, this storm sure looks impressive. I'm sure it's a mess especially for UA and F9, while at least UA can route people through ORD and IAD. This must essentially shut down Frontier completely. Does anyone know if F9 is bypassing Denver completely with any equipment, or are they just completely laying low until this thing clears?

Quoting Dinker225 (Reply 43):
was working this morning trying to rebook people. Most people unless they showed up early weren't able to get seats on United until Sunday or Monday. We have no idea when we are going to get flights arriving from Denver again. Tomorrow could be another very interesting day.

oh that's not good, my cousin is suposed to be flying in from LAX thru DEN tomorrow.
