Any Pics From DEN?

Fri Dec 22, 2006 1:27 am

I just found this one of a CO 735 (I think) under the snow on WED. Any others to share?

Oh, they did....

BWI was unofficially renamed "Ice Station Zebra" during that 2002 storm, but I suspect that name is more readily applicable to DEN at the moment...

According to flightaware, a CO 735 was the last plane to take off from DEN. That might be it.

Looking at the original pic, that is NOT a 735. Thats a 737NG. Look at the pitot tubes and the diameter of the engines and the landing gear skirt is more curved. Its not a 735.

Live in Phoenix. Earlier tonight I have had several clients attempt to set up flights in to the DEN area. The only info that I had was that BJC Jeffco may be opening up if weather permits. Weather has not been good but I have not been able to look up landings at BJC yet. We were able to get a Citation III into Grand Junction but that is very far from Denver.

By Christmas Day it should be all cleared up though. It should be fine.

Thanks for sharing that link. Pretty impressive pictures that they captured of the snow removal.

The airport is still NOTAM'd closed until 19z today. Wonder how many airplanes will lined up waiting to go at that time?!

since it is/was a 727 it is saving even more fuel - from 3 engines to no engines must save more than from 2 to none  Smile

That one has been there for several years at least...used to be painted in UAL colors...B727-200...I can't open the link on this comp but i'm pretty sure that's the one you're talking about, parked near the old CO hangar.

Why would they wait until daybreak to start plowing, don't they have lights on their plows? I think it is totally unacceptable that the airport was shut down so long, you would think this was the first time Denver saw snow...

Manpower, for one thing.

Also, the airlines still need to get fresh crews there. The ones there currently are the same ones that were there when this whole mess started.

Not only that, but how difficult is it to get to the airport when the roads leading to the airport were covered in 1-3 feet of snow? I can't drive in 4 inches, and could not imagine 1-3 feet!! I would imagine the airport snow removal crews were very short handed as most were probably stuck in their driveways at home.

In reality, DEN got sacked by this storm. Regardless if the plows kept the runways clear, they still had the challenge of being unable to get vehicle transportation to and from the airport. There would have been hundreds of thousands of passengers stuck waiting for cabs and cars to pick them up.

DEN airport is in the middle of nowhere. The highway leading to and from the airport is so darned far away from the city itself. IIRC, it takes about 30-45 minutes just to get downtown. Imagine getting to downtown from the airport during a blizzard.

Oh yeah. The surface streets and freeways were a mess too. It reminds me of the ORD blizzards when people just left their cars and ran for cover. At least they are going to have a white Christmas though. That is the only positive thing about this mess.

I really feel bad for the those that just want to get home for the holidays. I hope they do!

That is a United 727 that has been there since 2001/02. Originally it was damaged and United decided not to repair it in order just to fly it to the desert for retirement.

Instead, it is used for training purposes - deicing, ground handling, etc.

They didn't wait until daybreak, those pictures were taken Thursday afternoon 12/21 just before the sun went down. In fact they had been doing some plowing around the clock. In reality, the airfield could've opened yesterday, but the issue is with getting employees to the airport, ground transportation, and getting the ramp area cleaned off. As you can see in the photos, they had runways that could've been used at the time.

DEN actually is being smart about reopening the airport and they are attempting to do it in an orderly manner to prevent mass chaos at the airport. Things such as:
-Inbound flights arriving with no ground crews to offload bags, move jetbridges (DTW 1999 snowstorm)
-Lack of bus service/taxis/rental cars at the airport to get people to/from the airport
-Opening with just one runway which would lead to massive delays

Superb photos, depicts in excellent detail what the airport's snow removal folks are up against when faced with such a daunting task. Despite what Michael Boyd says, the DIA folks do their damndest to keep the place open as long as possible, and to reopen it as soon as they can.

Last I heard, they are only going to accept ten (10) planes per hout into DEN. That's definately going to be a huge backup for an airport that normally sees 40 per hour, and a max of 110.

The DIA website is now saying that they'll start out with 2 runways and attempt to add a third by evening. Just out of curiousity, anyone know which 2 runways they'll start with?

Sorry buddy, I don't know why you think this is unacceptable. This was a MAJOR storm here (I've been homebound for 2 days). Mail service was suspended, RTD (the bus system) suspended etc. When there is snow drifts on the runway that are almost as deep as an average man, on runways that are 2 and 3 miles long, that's going to take the plows some time to clear.

The one thing that has irked me about the media coverage from DIA is that they always find the one angry person who just doesn't understand the scope of the weather on the Front Range. I understand the frustration level, as I would hate to be stuck somewhere for days. But it just wasn't safe to fly. And if they open the airport under such conditions, and god forbid something should happen, they will all scream at the airport for being open in such conditions.

Also, the so called analyst the media calls upon to discuss the DIA situation opinions are not worth two cents and has made me throw stuff at the TV in frustration.

Always error on the side of safety, as Mother Nature in the end, will always win.

The photos that ARGinLON and Skibum9 posted are not theirs. Go to Yahoo! News and type Denver Airport. Then once you are on that page click on the link that says "More Image results for Denver Airport..." and you'll know what I'm I talking about. You will also find a lot of other photos of how the airport looked two days ago, yesterday, and today.
