LH & Star Alliance To Get Heathrow East

Fri Dec 22, 2006 3:43 am

Tried a search but didn't find anything.

http://www.thebusinessonline.com/Doc...9579E8-D1AA-4D78-B255-73DEB997EFB5

"BRITISH Airports Authority (BAA) is awarding Lufthansa and Star Alliance airlines exclusive use of its £2.5bn (E3.7bn, $4.9bn) Heath-row East terminal.

It had been unclear which airlines would benefit from the terminal, which will handle 30m passengers a year, when it was announced in April. Heathrow East will rival the £4.5bn Terminal 5, allocated to British Airways, and will be ready almost a year early in 2010.

The Business has learned that Mike Forster, BAA’s business strategy director, last week met chief executives of the Star Alliance in Istanbul to present new proposals for Heathrow East. "

Good news for LH and the Star Alliance, that's if this fog ever clears  Wink

Amen! T3 is such a dump and it always packed. This is great news for the big STAR operators at LHR (AC,UA,LH).

Any more slot potential with more terminal space with Heast?

The slots are to do with runway capacity and LHR is, pretty much, at capacity. I believe ATC could technically handle a few more aircraft per hour, but the number is capped per CAA rules.

Although the article seems to have branded LH as the main airline involved, it does reveal that the negociations have been conducted through bmi who will be the main user of the new facility - should also help the compete with BA and their new T5

Will also be far better for connections between Star Alliance Airlines having them all in one place

Erm....

Whilst AC,UA and LH are certainly "big" carriers, they are far from being the major Star Alliance carrier at LHR, that honour would fall to little ole BD wit about 14% of the TOTAL Heathrow slots.

Once T5 is up and running, T1 and T2 will be demolished and a new Terminal (now called "Heathrow East" because they can't think of a number) will be built. Star Alliance will then occupy that, while SkyTeam is at T4 and One World is at T3.

Here is a question: Where will Star Alliance be while Heathrow East is being built?

Only T2 and the Queen's Building will be demolished, not T1. Star will be based in T1 post-2008.

No, that is not correct because it is not possible: http://www.baa.com/assets/B2CPortal/...tatic%20Files/LHReast_birdseye.jpg

As you can see, Heathrow East will be on the land T1 is on. So, there isn't any way T1 can be in existence if Heathrow East is being built. (I am talking about the gate areas. I see that the check in area for T1 is being left intact for the time being)

The available capacity at T1 following BA's move to T5 will be taken up by the flights now operating from T2. After the demolition of T2 and rebuilding of the new Heathrow East, T1 will be demolished and the 2nd phase of Heathrow East will be completed. As far as I am aware there is still no definitive plans to demolish the "old" Control Tower as disscusions are still ongoing to what its future usage will be.

Same basic idea as the new construction at YYZ.. build half, move into that half, knock the rest down, finish the building.. voila!

Any idea which terminal Virgin will end up using?
Will Virgin co-share with Star as result of its close tie with SQ?

The BAA plan is for VS to go to Heathrow East with Star eventually. In the interim it may go to T4 with the non-aligned carriers. This link points to HE being Star + Virgin if there is agreement.

Star are moving into T1 starting 2008, T2 and the Queens Building are being demolished and will be rebuilt in time for the London Olympics.

They are in the middle of the airport along with the bus station so I'm sure there will be some way of getting there within walking distance.

Where will gates 80-90 be? In the image provided by Kaitak744 you can see two Aer Lingus aircraft parked up at gates 89 and 90 will they remain?

I guess they will demolish T2 and QB and leave T1 as it is initially, then once HE is built they will move everyone in, then get on and demolish T1 to fill in the void that is shown in the pic. I would guess the T1 gates will remain at least until part of the HE gates are ready otherwise it would be a nightmare having to coach almost every flight - would end up being like FRA !!!.

No it isn't. VS are staying in T3 at least until HE is ready. They have just spent millions of ££ re-furbishing the Clubhouse, I can't see them wanting that to go to waste in less than 2 years time and I hear they are having other work done to enhance the check-in area once the building work outside T3 is completed.

Yes. But Willie Walch of BA recently said after talking to BAA that he expected that T5C would open eleven months earlier than originally planned in May 2010:
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,,1973579,00.html
So either the article is poorly written or the reporter has misunderstood what the situation and is confusing T5C with Heathrow East.

As far as the completion date given for Heathrow East - March 2012 - I am surprised it can be that soon. I know the British government is trying to speed up the granting (or denial) of major planning applications but I was not even aware that any planning application for Heathrow East had yet been made. And until the application is made and granted I do not see how a completion date can be given. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I'll second that. I love flying with them between EDI/GLA and LHR. It hardly takes any time between the central coach station and the gate 8 area.

The last I heard, they were hoping planning permission would not be required as they are only replacing buildings which are already there, and not starting a new development

I thought that myself comapred to the amount of time T5 has taken, but then I remembered where T5 was built and what it was built on. That took a good 2-3 years of site preparation just to be able to start building. They won't have that problem in the central area though as once T2 and QB are demolished they will pretty much be able to get straight on and build the new terminal.

Wow, touchy!! I do believe you may have been thinking of BA Connect, ANTIX, although the usual rumours abound about BMi and Virgin etc etc.

As a BA Connect employee who will not be moving to Exeter with the cowboy outfit, I think we have plenty of things to worry about, and have a right to be "touchy". Rather more than BMi I fancy.

RE: LH & Star Alliance To Get Heathrow East

Thanks for this link:

See this link for the March 2012 date:
http://www.baa.com/portal/controller...a____

It states that the March 2012 date for Heathrow East is an 'ambition' and is subject to obtaining planning approval. One has to think that BAA's selection of this date is clever and at least partly political. They seem to be saying to the government 'You need Heathrow East to secure the success of the investment in the London 2012 Olympics.'

As far as the completion date given for Heathrow East - March 2012 - I am surprised it can be that soon.

I thought that myself comapred to the amount of time T5 has taken, but then I remembered where T5 was built and what it was built on.

But unless things are changed the planning approval could take years and years. How long it actually takes under current legislation (1948 Town and Country Planning Act) will depend on the local planning authority. If they approve BAA's plans it can be a matter of months from start to finish. If the planning authority rejects BAA's plans then BAA will have to resort to first a public inquiry and - if that fails - a High Court appeal.

The delay here unless the government legislates (which it has said it will) to reduce the 'democratic' right of virtually anyone who can claim that they will be impacted by a development to have there say can be huge. A well organised 'anti' campaign is capable, under the current sysytem, of keeping a public inquiry (that the tax payer has to foot the bill for) going almost interminably. All you need to do is to find a large number of NIMBYs who are willing to give evidence to an inquiry.
