Plane Clips Big Rig And Crashes, 3 KilledBuchanan Field In Concord
Dec. 21 - BCN - A plane attempting to land at Buchanan Field Airport in Concord crashed into a big-rig and erupted in flames, killing three people while its making landing approach over state Highway 4, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Scott Yox.

Yox said the plane was arriving from San Diego and making its second landing attempt and that there was low visibility in the area when the aircraft crashed into the center divide of eastbound state Highway 4.

According to eyewitnesses, the plane cartwheeled across the roadway and ended up on the right shoulder of state Highway 4, where it caught on fire, Yox said.

According to Yox, firefighters extinguished the flames and managed to remove a 10-year-old boy and an adult from the wreckage.

All three adult passengers in the plane died and the child was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland with critical injuries, Yox said.

Eastbound Highway 4 is closed between Interstate Highway 680 and Solano Avenue.

Yox said CHP is investigating the incident

How about you chill out for 5 minutes and let me write the story first since I'm editing it on Pathfire for affiliate broadcast.....mmmmkay?

INFORMATION:
California authorities say at least one person is dead after a small plane
crashed Thursday (12/21) along Highway 4 near the Concord airport.

The plane went down at about 11 a-m. The plane also clipped a big rig as it
crashed. There's no word yet on the condition of the truck's driver.

The plane suffered massive front end damage and appears to have struck the
median near along Highway 4.
That section of highway is about 200 yards from the airport runway.

Highway 4 and Interstate 680 are both closed near the site of the crash.

Appears to be a Piper Meridian N1052L. Last plane to arrive at KCCR. That C172 returned to KSAC. Not confirmed, but that's what it looks like. Brand new Meridian (9/21) registration date.

This is bad. This is the second time a car was hit by a plane that went down while on final to Concord. I'm sure there is going to be a public cry to close this airport now.

SF Chronicle reports: "No one on the ground was injured, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor. Initial reports that the plane had struck a dump truck and crashed into the airfield turned out to be wrong, officials said."

No car, no truck.

Buchanan has some history: "The crash happened two days before the 21st anniversary of the Dec. 23, 1985, disaster that occurred when a plane trying to land at the same airfield crashed into nearby Sunvalley Mall, killing seven people and injuring 78."

It was actually N1AM.

I live about 15min West of this airport in Orinda, Ca. I fly out of this airport weekly. I think the rumors and issues regarding this "airports problem" are pure rubbish. SFO, OAK, HWD are all airports that are far too far to travel to for General Aviation. My friend, a fellow pilot, and I went to the scene tonight to find the CHP watching it like a hawk. I currently fly out of LVK for training and that drive can be as long as an hour during peek hours both ways. CCR serves its place here in the Bay Area. Many rumors have been going around about the airport being closed for housing, etc.

There are currently 2 FBO's out of CCR. Pacific States Aviation (to which this aircraft was to arrive) and Sterling Aviation. There are also many private hangers. There is far too much going on here to just close it due to two accidents in a 2 year period. The first accident, despite what Dreamflight has said, was on take off from 19R with an engine failure. Because he chose to turn back to the airport, he hit 680 which, had he not, he would have probably ended up on top of the Sunvalley Mall which is on the other side of the freeway. Please keep in mind that all of these things have grown around the airport. It is a risk that comes with such a place. Unfortunately, the two main runways in use (19R/L) (32R/L) have freeways that back up to the foot of the runways. Again, a risk that you take.

Thanks,

Matthew

I was just thinking that all the TV news anchors in Boston have an air of 'self-importance' about them, when in fact they are mere steps away from rolling burritos at Taco Bell. Must be an industry thing.

Um...as you must not have noted above, or in any of the news reports today, there was no car or truck (sorry: ''rig") hit by the Malibu. Some vehicles on Hwy. 4 ran over some scattered debris from the initial impact, but none were hit by the plane. So: you got the facts wrong too, and I'm not sure what you do for a living.

Initial reports did say "car," then "truck," but were corrected later, probably after STLgph's newscast aired. (And yes, Gavin, I know a few folks at KGO-7...wonder who was covering the story. The downside of not actually watching TV, eh!)

I'm just happy to see someone in the media trying to get the facts (aircraft type, org-dest, and circumstance) correct. We get enough displeasure on this site when the media calls a 737 a 757 and vice versa, that it's great when an enthusiast is also in the media.

My point being that if you are in the profession of reporting the news you should get the facts right first. Then and only then should you report it. Unfortunately, in this day and age that is seldom done. I am not going to tell you where I work, but if my employees or I put getting it out first above getting it right, Then planes would be falling out of the sky right and left.

I didn't air the newscast here...it simply came our way via Pathfire to load up into the scripting systems because most of the editors out west were busy with snowstorm coverage in Denver which was piling through at about two blurbs a minute.

As for the airfoils guy...he wouldn't last a minute one man banding.

Speaking of Pathfire...I caught wrong footage concerning the Northwest Airlines video concerning the Mesaba take over...there was magically a Southwest 737 taking off right in the middle Northwest DC9's. It got cut real quick!

Hello all,

After going back to the scene the "Truck" involved appears to have been struck by the prop of the aircraft either during the crash or after the front of the aircraft had been hit. The truck is now sitting at CHP's offices an exit down the road. News media did report that it had struck a car but I think everyone's theory that it had hit the truck, then crashed, has taken over facts.

Thanks,

Matt
