Snowed In Employees

For all of the airport employees/airline employees, what happens in a situation such as the one happening right now in DEN? I reckon that just about everyone who was there when the storm hit, would still be there, from CSAs to tower operators, to rampers, to cleaners, to shop attendants, to pilots. I would also reckon that some of these would just keep on working, like the CSAs obviously, and the shop attendants, while there is still food to sell, which I'm sure has been depleted by now. I guess they just plug on, catchin naps when they can. Since the airport is indeed closed, not much need for controllers or pilots, so I guess they are chillin in their respective break rooms. Can the flight crews start taking this "down" time as crew rest so that when the airport is indeed opened again they can fly again? This entire situation must be trying for emplyees and passengers alike. I hope and pray that this situation will end soon and everything will be all right.

Good chance, and I base this on only one occasion of being snowed in at the airport while on duty, that the airline will try and find a hotel in advance for as many of their employees to bunk 2 to a room and send them out, so they can have an available workforce the next day. Of course, there has to be the hotel space available, as well as 4WD transportation to and from.

Passengers normally don't want to leave the airport thinking that if they leave, then they won't be one of the first to be able to leave when the airport reopens. They also don't want to leave because they think the airlines control the weather and should pay for their hotel.

Just my 2 cents.

When I was at AS, we had a snowstorm that hit in 1998. We had no choice but to report to work anyway, even though I called and asked if I needed to come in. When I got to work, my supervisor gave me a real stern & funny look after that. This was in SEA, by the way.

As a part of our hurricane watch duties here at MSY, us airport operator employees are given a cot, sheets, blankets, pillows, etc, and simply camp out in our various offices. After Katrina, I used two cots (including one from home) pushed together, an air bed on top of that, and camped out in my office for the better part of two weeks (until the power came back on at my house).

Our food and beverage contractor (here it's CA One) usually keeps four or five days of food stockpiled, so we don't go hungry, and we have a good amount of MRE's stashed away should we lose power. Many of us, including myself, have refrigerators in our offices, which we keep stocked (with many different types of items  wink  ).

The airlines will usually keep a skeleton crew here, and they usually make their own arrangements.

At JFK, we usually put up the CSA's at the hotel the night before a storm hits. Has worked pretty well in the past. For those who insist on going home, we try to arrange car pools as taxi services are almost non-existent when these storms hit.

I was non-reving thru DEN years ago when Stapleton shut down for a day, and I couldnt get home to SLC. I reported to a Supervisor and told them I could help out. I worked as though I was a DEN agt and once there was an empty seat back to SLC they let me go. I wasnt the only one that did that back then, and Im sure this time around, many helped out too. ABQ got hit in 96 and again a few years back with a bad storm and we stayed across the street at the Wyndam, for rest. I havent spoken to anyone this week about Tues, when ABQ was closed for about 3 hrs, but I know it was bad. The city and airlines didnt coordinate snow removal from the runways and de-icing. Thus planes de-iced had to go back to the gate or pad and start all over, till the rwys were clear.
ABQ ops, Cactus 202 requesting you order 5 Green Chile Chicken stew for us to p/u on arrival. ;)

Our company at PIT will put us up in the Hyatt hotel which is on airport grounds and requires no driving. This will make us available to work in the morning if people cant make it in. I believe we have a room available even if the hotel is sold out of rooms.
