Flashback: Vanguard 737-300 At LAX

Fri Dec 22, 2006 10:22 am

Vanguard. What a name for an airline. Especially for one that was based at...of all places....Kansas City. Anyone care to shed some light on what this airline was about?

I know they operated 737-200's and later, MD-80's. But for a brief time, they also operated a couple of Dash 300's, as the accompanying pictures show. Frankly, I'm surprised this airline lasted as long as they did.

All three were taken at LAX, if memory serves correctly, sometime in 1996. I know they started in early 1995 and didn't come to LAX until quite some time later. Judging from the conditions (picture 1 shows very little smog whereas pix 2 and 3 are considerably smoggy), I apparently saw this plane and took the pix on 2 different dates.

Thanks for looking.

I've been in LAX at the nineties and saw some B737-300s parked there, i remember the airline.

Do you can post all the fleet operated by Vanguard?

The name.....what a name for an airline...it means the airline name was the best for an airline.

Unfortunatelly....the airline ceased operations...Vanguard named....

I think we (NJ) got those -300's from Aloha if I can remember correctly. One of the trainers in MCI told me that anyway. I got one with NJ well after the last 300 was retired.

NJ operated 737-200's (including one painted in the new scheme, N239TA...gorgeous bird), MD-80's, and MD-87's at the very end.

It was an excellent little airline. I actually pushed back the last flight from MSY with about 100 people on it and then listened in on the conference call telling everyone that the airline is out of business and no one needs to report to work tomorrow.

NJ flew to these cities before its demise, all nonstop from MCI, with one exception: BUF, which was served direct from MDW.

ATL
BUF
AUS
COS
DFW
DEN
FLL
LAS
LAX
LGA
MCO
MSY
MYR (seasonal service)
PIT
SEA
SFO

I might have missed one or two but those should just about cover it.

MD-80's were used primarily to ATL, DFW, DEN, LAS, LAX, LGA, SFO...the M87's were used to SEA, SFO, PIT, LGA, and some ATL/DFW runs....the 732's flew everywhere, even MCI-LAX near the end.

They were, from all reports, a nice bunch. AA fares on pairs Vanguard served from DFW were always dirt-cheap, with lots of frequency.

'Course, they stopped as soon as Vanguard was Tango-Uniform.

Just coincidence.

Looks right. Checking rzjets.net, both look like they had the same sequence of operators: Transbrasil, Aloha, Vanguard, America West, Shandong, Bluebird Cargo, and Estafeta Carga Aerea. Sequential line numbers too, almost looks like these two like to hang out together.  Wink

I know they flew MDW to MSP as well. Dad flew them once, enjoyed them very much. Was disappointed when they went out of business  Sad

I flew them on one trip- MCI-MSP-MCI. The people working for the airline were very nice. But- that's all I can really say. Our flight to MSP was late by several hours, as there were so many extra people the airline decided to upgrade the flight from a 737-200 to a 737-300. The problem was that the plane was not yet at MCI.

On the return, we were also about 4 hours late. Evidently there was a light out on the front of the plane. They couldn't get it fixed. We tried to get another flight home. However, Vanguard had no agreements with other airlines. The worst part of it was that the flight was supposed to depart before 6AM. It was an awfully miserable morning.

Never flew them again.

Yes it seemed a friendly fun airline, I flew them once on MYR-ATL, nice service, no complaints.
MCI served as mini hub as well, Vanguard often showed up as cheapest option if you'd wanted to go between any of the cities they flew to. Obviously they didn't reach the size to do that profitably, otherwise they could be comparible to what Frontier or Spirit is now.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?
