El Al Upgrades @ JFK On Day Of Flight?

Sun Dec 24, 2006 4:38 pm

Hello everyone:

I am traveling aboard El Al later this week, on flight 002 from JFK to TLV, aboard one of their 747-400s.

Is it possible to upgrade from economy to a higher class of service (Platinum or First) for a nominal fee during check-in?

I am not sure what fare class my economy ticket is, as it was purchased as part of a large group (30+ of us).

Any suggestions or knowlege you're willing to share would be appreciated!!!

Thank you,
Ryan.

Hi Ryan,

If you are a gold tier holder that's done for 100 points during check in (on a basis of availability). Otherwise the check in person will refer you to the ticketing office. The price of the upgrade depends on your original booking class.

Have a nice trip.

I have never flown El Al before, let alone visit Israel, so I don't have any status with the airline.

I do have nearly 30,000 Delta SkyMiles, as I know Delta is a FFP partner to some extent.

I will see what the agent says this Thursday at JFK.

Also, what type of service can I expect in Economy on this long flight?

Thank you!

Hi Ryan!

Do not expect to be able to upgrade for a "nominal fee" – the last time I checked it was about $1000 based on availability (each way), if your ticket allows upgrades (If you are on a Birthright Mission – forget it. Their tickets are very restricted). The flights now are quite full, and I doubt that there will be space. Besides, if you are traveling with a group, the flight time is a good time to bond with them.

El Al's service is competent, there are PTV's with a number of movie choices but no VOD. There is also a selection of music channels. The food is good flying to Israel and great when departing (all meals are Kosher). They will serve a dinner and a breakfast.

Seating is tight but no more so than on other airlines. Try and get a window for your fist views of Israel when crossing the coast line. Make sure to grab some sleep as most tours have you hit the ground running. Ear plugs are essential!

Shalom and welcome to Israel. I am sure you will have a great time here.

From my experience on JFK-TLV, the chances for upgrade are low. However, I find LY economy product not that bad - seat pitch on 744 is 34", which is pretty rare these days. PTV s are from the old generation - small. Note that they still may have free Connexion internet access - they had it last week and the purser mentioned that the offering may be extended to January.
