Zoom ''UK'' To Open Crew-base At LGW

Mon Dec 25, 2006 1:29 am

Hi Guys

A friend of mine has an interview with Zoom in Jan for longhaul crew position
LGW based, flying initially UK-Canada, although the website says they hope to expand to other Int'l destinations in the very near future!

Any have any idea where??

Well Zoom-UK will most likely start out with a LGW-JFK routing. I haven't heard much of them doing the UK-Canada routings, but would be good familiarization for them.

Good luck to your friend I hope they do get it! It's a good opportunity I'd say!

Really??? That's gonna be interesting.... head to head with DL!
And of course, countless other airlines at LHR!
Seems like a likely, but perhaps, ODD choice of first route eh?

From what I understand Zoom UK plan to start low cost ops from LGW to the East coast of the States, JFK likely to be the launch route, plans for west coast SFO/LAX I think are in the pipeline although exact details appear a little thin on the ground.

Will be interesting to see how this will impact on DL's new LGW-JFK daily (double-daily from S07?) and CO's LGW-EWR services.DL may just have to grin and bare it until they can move their JFK service up the road to the 'row.

Will be nice to see a new airline get some more long hauls at LGW which suffers from being in the shadow of LHR, some O&D low cost long hauls will be welcomed and should do well.

Can zoom fly LGW-JFK? i thought Delta had to wait and buy the rights off United before it started the LGW-JFK route in November.
next flights : BD LHR-TXL J, FR SXF-STN Y, SN BRU-LHR Y, MA LHR-BUD Y, BA BUD-LHR J, BA LCY-SNN-JFK J, BA JFK-LHR J, BA

Good point - maybe there are exceptions what with Canada being part of the commonwealth? not really sure TBH.

I have information from a Zoom employee stating that they are setting up a UK base to launch LGW-JFK operations starting May 2007.

As for the technicalities of how this is possible ... no idea.

What are the chances of ZoomUK taking some of the present UK-Canada routes as well, so ZoomCA can concentrate on other destinations within North/South America and maybe more into mainland Europe?
Zoom (and others - Flyglobespan) have shown that Lo-cost Long Haul can work so i wish ZoomUK every success!

And you never know, with the rumour mill that HQ is on the rocks at the moment, maybe Canadian Zoom may just apply for what they've managed to do: China designation, possible rights to Australia...etc.

With Zoom being focused on the leisure/VFR markets, I somehow couldn't see them flying to China

Remember they are not really a charter airline, but a hybrid of scheduled and charter/ad-hoc

Another mate of mine has ''confirmed'' that they will start with east coast U, prob JFK/BOS/IAD, then look to expand in Autumn 07 to SFO and LAX, then adding some Caribbean and Mexican destinations, before looking to India! There are also some links, one being close to their main investor, the Bank Of Scotland, suggesting the same, on the web.

Which is exactly why I couldn't see them going to China which would be heavily focused on business passengers which are not Zoom's main customer base. They are focused on leisure passengers

Canada has a large population of mainland Chinese, many of whom are budget oriented -- not only business oriented. I'm sure flights would do well be it through a semi sched how Zoom are, or on a charter basis. A charter idea hasn't really been played around with from North America to Asia, but would be an idea. I mean Europe works? Why not Asia?

we can only hope !!!

AC service to OZ is hopeless.

If eg. u want to fly from BNE on an AC ticket, u must at this time of year, get an 0500 QF flight to SYD to connect, in other words, don't go to be as u must be at BNE dom airport by 0300-0400, so don't bother going to bed the night before !!!

AC for a time about 12 months ago or was it 2 years ago, operated SYD/YVR nonstop A343 service, which apparently was popular, but all AC services now go thru HNL middle of night. yuk !!!

Quoting LHRGregSE4 (Reply 11):

Let's hope so. YVR/HNL/BNE services with same aircraft were very popular with SE-Queenslanders (BNE), as avoided awful SYD. Flying to SYD adds about 5-7 hours to total journey & who wants to do that anymore.

What about UK/Den ?

Apparently Zoom have been carrying a lot of Uk skiers to Canada this winter & skiing in Colorado is now much cheaper than anywhere in Canada.

Hey ZoomUK, since it's the season of giving, can I have LGW - MIA service again. For those of us who want service to southern England, it is better than LHR! Better yet, LGW-FLL would be much appreciated. I know, European from FLL doesn't work, but I can wish!!!

I think I read that Vancouver has the second largest ethnic Chinese population in North america after San Fran. Not sure if that is true or not - but certainly there is plenty of VFR opportunity for a budget carrier between Canada and China. Its one of the reasons that Oasis Hong Kong has plans for Vancouver as a future destination.

And with current exchange rates the US is fantastically cheap to visit for Brits.  Smile

Does anybody know what the aircraft plans are for Zoom UK? Starting with one of the Canadian planes? I understand the 767-300 market is fairly tight at the moment.

LGW-based... 744s... could Air Atlanta be involved? Something like the Travelcitydirect / XL 747 operations?

Only a thought...

I'd be amazed if Zoom UK op 744's on LGW-US routes, much more likely to be 763s.

The aircraft will be a 763ER coming from Air Europa around May 2007. The aircraft will be EC-HKS / GU-KZM. Another aircraft will join the Zoom UK fleet Oct2007.

Jonathan Hinkles (ex-Astraeus, Citiflyer and BWA) is the Managing Director.

Not sure if he lurks around this forum, but he's definitely a PPRuNe contributor.

Will Zoom UK effectively be run from Zoom Canada HQ in YOW ?

Knowing Jonathan, I highly doubt he would go into any project that he didn't have complete control over.

Also, FWIW, the strings at Zoom Canada are being pulled from Glasgow for all practical purposes.

Is it not two brothers that own Zoom or one owns a package holiday company and one owns the airline. Anyway one still lives hear in scotland and has intrest's in Motherwell Fc zoom sponsored them last season also. These guys founded Direct Holidays before selling to my travel.
