KL590/24DEC went tech and the aircraft had to return to the gate. Passengers were offloaded and the flight was supposed to leave on 25DEC at 1.15pm LT. It has since been postponed by another 24 hours and is now scheduled to leave on 26DEC in the afternoon. Couldn't have been a diversion from Nigeria: LOS gets B772 this winter.

The above incident is but one of the current MD11s issues. It has yet again been another bad week for KLM's problem aircraft. KL606/24DEC SFO AMS had to return to the gate shortly after pushback and only left again over 3 hours later. Just a day later KL606/25DEC is currently having technical problems again and the flight is now delayed for about 6 hours. Also yesterday, KL874/25DEC HYD AMS made an unscheduled stop at IST and arrived 3 hours behind schedule in AMS. Meanwhile, one MD11 frame is still stuck in ACC.

that sucks for KLM, what is the problem with the KL MD-11s?? I flew Marie Curie and florence nightingale to DEL and back, i thought they had been maintained quite well but i guess engines and other stuff might be the issue!!

I don't know the precise root causes of the continued technical problems, but the dispatch reliability of the 10-strong MD11 fleet has reached abysmal levels by all industry standards and the MD11 destinations in the KLM longhaul network are suffering regular operational irregularities. I believe that the reduced reliability of the MD11 fleet is one of the reasons why KLM opted to reconfigure these aircraft in a holiday like layout with just 24 premium seats. In the future, the MD11 will be deployed in the airline's lowest yielding markets.

The MD11 is causing KLM a lot of headaches this week. Just a day after the MD11 stuck in ACC returned to AMS, another MD11 got stuck, this time in YUL. KL672/26DEC could not return to AMS because of technical problems and the flight is delayed for 26 hours. At the same time KL741/26DEC AMS LIM, left AMS 7 hours behind schedule because of technical problems and is only due back in AMS later tonight at 11pm, causing all passengers to lose their connections. For a second day in a row, KL606/SFO arrived in AMS on 27DEC as well. Of the 10 MD11s in the KLM fleet, only 5 are currently flying on schedule.
