Missing Flight Between 2 Alliance Hubs

Tue Dec 26, 2006 10:05 am

I am planning a RTW and while constructing it came across several alliance hubs that are not inter-connected. Below are some of the routes I found odd not to be connected. Does anyone have others? Also, is there not enough traffic to justify the same?

Star Alliance:

- LIS-VIE (surprising to me)
- LIS-WAW
- ORD-VIE (surprising given how many ex-East Europeans live in ORD and can connect through VIE)
- AKL-ICN

(In case it isn't obvious, I am doing the RTW on Star)

Everyone's favorite at SkyTeam.........MSP - CDG to connect the NW hub at MSP and the AF hub at CDG.

VIENNA CONNECTED NONSTOP TO 4 NORTH AMERICAN CITIES

Austrian Airlines will commence nonstop service roundtrip from Chicago to Vienna in May 2007, it was announced today in New York by Paul Paflik, Austrian’s General Manager the Americas. “This will be Austrian’s fourth North American gateway – after New York, Washington and Toronto,” said Paflik, “and it represents a major expansion of our transatlantic service.”

Austrian’s Chicago flights will initially operate four times weekly, using Boeing 767 equipment, and quickly increase to daily by summer. “In addition to the Chicago flights, operating 6 times a week, summer 2007 will see us flying daily from Washington and Toronto, and virtually twice daily from New York’s JFK International Airport,” Paflik added.

Not many people flew Austrian to Poland via VIE when OS used to fly here pre-9/11. Austrian was always more expensive, speaking from first hand experience as Ive flown ORD-LHR-WAW x 4, ORD-MUC-WAW, ORD-FRA-WAW x 2, ORD-AMS-WAW x 3, ORD-ZRH-WAW x 3. Definately the most popular transit point was ZRH, FRA and AMS. Cant speak for the rest of CEE countries.

I suspect the Phoenix gaps will be plugged quickly in the event of a Delta merger with US -- otherwise, at least FRA will probably be covered with the A332s that are coming online in the next couple of years at US.

I don't believe any non-North American Star Alliance Carrier flies to any of US Airways hubs or focus cities other than Lufthansa, who flies to Boston, Charlotte, and Philadelphia, British Midland, who flies to Las Vegas, and Swiss, who flies to Boston.

That's a bizarre "point" to make. . . Lufthansa, United and Air Canada being the three principal international carriers in * that fly throughout North America and Asia (and all three of them offering service to US's principal hub at PHL and the latter two offering services to all US hubs and focus cities).

US also connects its own hubs to other Star hubs, including Manchester, Oslo, Lisbon, and Stockholm, as well as regular scheduled flights to the United, Air Canada and Lufthansa primary hubs. They've also announced new service to Zurich from Philadelphia. It would be difficult to characterize the US Airways system as "unconnected" from the Star Alliance as a result.

And while I'd love Singapore Airlines, Thai and ANA to fly to Philadelphia, I'd expect a US/"new Delta" flight to NRT before any of those carriers come in to a US hub.

Yes. The 787 is an incredible plane that will put big-time pressure on non-competitive airports to get their acts together or lose business to nearby aiports with a superior business model.

I could easily see, for instance, a revamped Luton taking on Heathrow and Gatwick with lower fares and a carrier loaded up with 787s. With the Thameslink connection to the City, and the planned runway extension, Luton could probably even attract away some transatlantic business from Gatwick for 787-equipped carriers.

It could also open up non-stops between smaller cities in the USA and Europe to Asian cities. Philadelphia, Washington DC, etc. could benefit.

Well if we consider YVR a hub for AC.
Bangkok (Used to be served by CP)
Singapour (Singapour conects through SEL)
JNB (To far anyhow)
This is just off the top of my head, YYZ could also be missing those flights... do not quote me on that though I do not follow it to much  Wink.

JFK isn't a Star Alliance hub, though.

The only Star almost-hub in the New York area is LGA (US Airways).

if they are small, what is big?

DFW-MAD
LHR-SYD (not logistically possible yet, but it is still 2 alliance hubs without a non-stop flight)
HKG-SCL
NRT-SCL (once JL is a member)
NRT-MIA (once JL is a member)

As I'm based at ARN (a Star hub), I could add that the only Star hubs with direct flights from ARN are CPH, OSL, FRA, MUC, VIE, WAW, ZRH, LHR, MAD, BCN, ORD, and BKK. Which means that the missing links are all Star hubs in North America (with the exception of ORD), JNB, SIN, ICN, NRT, AKL, and probably a few more that I forgot.

Quoting USAirPlatinum (Reply 8):
US also connects its own hubs to other Star hubs, including Manchester, Oslo, Lisbon, and Stockholm,

US does not fly to Oslo. They had a seasonal flight between PHL-ARN last summer, but it does not operate this winter.

I cannot see this for the simple reason that the 787 does not have any orders from any airline likely to open up a hub at Luton.

Not surprising at all. TP has been in * less than a year and it's quite possible that there is little demand for these routes. Having said that, LIS-WAW is served by Portugalia which is now part of TP and IIRC, TP served VIE in the past but they dropped it.

Skyteam:

MSP-MEX
MSP-CDG

I could come up with a bunch more which are not very realistic. But these two seem like they have a shot, given the availability of the right equipment. MSP-MEX could be even be done on a 319 or 320.
